Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Laboratory is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to act as a technical information resource, troubleshoot test performance issues, and support quality initiatives across multiple lab sections.

The role involves working with medical technologists, training new staff, operating LIS and equipment, and delivering excellent service to internal and external customers. Requires an associate degree and AA/MLT certification eligibility with certification within six months.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in science-related field is required.
• Successful completion of an NAACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program or equivalent.
• Certification in MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) or registration eligibility with certification exam within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot issues related to specimen quality, instrument performance and analytical interferences.
• Assist with quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.
• Operate laboratory information systems and train new staff or students.
• Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
• Perform procedures across West Lakes Lab, Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry and Microbiology sections.
• Analyze quality control data and maintain test accuracy and precision.

Employment Type: Full time Shift: Day Shift Description:

Acts as technical information resource for MercyOne Des Moines Laboratory. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge and skills to troubleshoot and resolve them. Consults with Medical Technologists and/or Medical Laboratory Scientists when appropriate. Performs tasks and procedures specific to assigned section with minimal supervision.

• Uses educational and technical expertise to troubleshoot issues related to specimen quality, instrument/method performance and analytical interferences to ensure patient results match clinical status.

• Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.

• Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records.

• Maintains supply inventories.

• Trains new employees and acts as preceptor for laboratory students.

• Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.

• Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

Functions specific to West Lakes Lab, Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry and Microbiology Sections:

• Performs complex laboratory procedures utilized for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.

• Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.

• Performs preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.

• Assists with new instrument or procedure implementation and training.

General Requirements:

• Associate’s degree in science-related field.
• Successful completion of a N AACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program or alternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements.
• Certification in one of the following:
• Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Medical Laboratory Technician (M L T) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
• A person may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the requirements for registration for the certification exam. The exam must be successfully completed within six (6) months of hire.
