General Summary


The Medication Technician I performs tasks that involve specific services for residents which are supportive and complementary to individual care requirements, including but not limited to: assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, and toileting, conducting activity programs designed for residents’ experiencing dementia; and basic medical record documentation, self-administration of medications, assistance to order medications and to maintain all required medication inventory paperwork. The position requires variable scheduled assignments as either fulfilling direct resident care assistant duties or medication technician duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attends to environment/room cleanliness, ventilation, lighting and furniture arrangements.
  • Assists residents with personal cleanliness, dressing, grooming, eating/nourishment, rest, activity, and toileting in a manner conducive to the residents’ comfort, safety, and dignity.
  • Preserves the dignity and self-respect of all residents at all times.
  • Promotes psychosocial care as directed and instructed for individual residents.
  • Monitors and reports changes in the resident’s attitude, appearance, behavior, and
  • physical ability to the Shift Supervisor or Resident Care Manager.
  • Conducts and assists with recreational activities as assigned.
  • Recognizes and respects the individual resident’s emotional, social, cultural, and religious needs and beliefs.
  • Practices conservation of equipment and supplies, keeping them clean and ready for use. Reports any equipment and supply needs to the Shift Supervisor or Resident Care Manager
  • Is accountable for knowing the whereabouts of all assigned residents at all times.
  • Keeps written notes of specific assignments and records pertinent information about the
  • residents in the resident's chart.
  • Does laundry as assigned.
  • Develops positive relationships with residents, families and frequent visitors.
  • Promptly answers call signals. Frequently checks on residents unable to remember how to use the call signal.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding information about residents and their families.
  • Strives to preserve resident privacy.
  • Assists with resident re-ordering of medications and medical supplies.
  • Reports and assist with reporting when equipment and supplies are needed.
  • Inputs medication orders, and all other areas of documentation in medical records.
  • Observes and monitors for changes in resident conditions and reports to supervisor and resident responsible parties and physician timely.
  • Ensures timely communication to resident’s physician on changes in condition, pertinent observations, concerns (both physical and psychosocial) via phone, electronic or fax.
  • Documents any resident concerns, family communications or physician communications in the resident’s clinical chart timely and accurately.
  • Assists residents with self-medication dosages and residents’ compliance in taking
  • prescribed medications as per RCFE regulations.
  • Follows the “five rights” prior to assisting residents with self-administration.
  • Ensures that narcotic counts are accurate each shift. Initiates proper procedure for inaccurate counts.
  • Ensures medications are current, non-expired, and properly stored.
  • Completed all state required documentation on Central Log for each medication.
  • Ensures residents who receive assistance with medications have an ample supply.
  • Ensures medication cart and back-up storage is neat, clean and organized at all times.
  • May assist residents with basic first aid, if needed. Will maintain current First Aid training and certification. May also be CPR certified.
  • May initiate requests for emergency services (911) if needed.
  • Supports and assists the resident assistants/caregivers with resident ADL’s including, b ut not limited to: personal cleanliness, bathing, grooming, dressing, eating/nourishment, rest, activity, and toileting in a manner conducive to the residents’ comfort, safety, and dignity as needed.
  • Ensures resident assistants tasks are completed for the shift.
  • Communicates barriers to task completion to supervisor and next shift timely.
  • Coordinates / adjusts resident care assistant assignments as needed to ensure tasks a re completed.
  • May work with other staff to plan and conduct special events fundraisers and ACC programs.
  • Attends required in-service and training programs.
  • Demonstrates compliance with applicable ACC policies, procedures and standards.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding information about residents and their families.
  • Strives to preserve resident privacy.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Effective English communication skills, both verbal and written. Fluency in languages other than English is preferred.
  • Ability to understand and carry out directions or instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Possession of a genuine interest and concern for persons suffering from dementia.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant, helpful and courteous manner with all residents, personnel, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Ability to maintain an understanding and accepting attitude with residents.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Shall be certified in first aid.
  • Possess and maintain good personal hygiene. Acceptable personal grooming and
  • Knowledge and use of proper body mechanics and safety mechanics.
  • Compliance with all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations is required.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Must be at least 18 and first aid certified.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Ability to lead small group activities programs (after receiving training).
  • Willingness to perform a variety of simple repetitive tasks that may involve unpleasant conditions and maintain patience and tact.
  • Ability to record messages and keep simple records.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding information about residents and their families.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Effective English communication skills, verbal and written. Bilingual is a plus!
  • Compliance with all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations is required.
  • Must be able to properly lift 30 pounds. Physical demands vary from sedentary activities to hands-on resident care, which includes lifting, bending from the waist, stooping, and twisting as conditions warrant. Objects weighing more than 50 pounds should not be moved without the assistance of another worker and/or appropriate equipment. Hours of duty may be long and irregular, including evenings and weekends.
