Job summary

Lake Charles Memorial Health System is seeking a Medical Technologist to join our clinical laboratory. The successful candidate will perform quality control, instrument maintenance, and a broad range of analyses to support diagnosis and patient care.

He/she reports to the Assistant Director of Pathology and works within a collaborative lab team at our Lake Charles facility. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in medical technology, completes a one-year internship, and possesses a Louisiana

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
  • Completion of a one-year internship in medical technology.
  • Louisiana CLS-Generalist license; MT (ASCP) or equivalent cert.
  • Strong communication and basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by calibration and documentation.
  • Records repairs and maintenance on logs.
  • Conducts chemical, hematological, microbiological, immunological analyses of body fluids.
  • Analyzes test results and records findings.
  • Trains and supervises students.
  • Performs duties according to age-specific needs.
  • Performs troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Communicates critical results within guidelines.
  • Notifies Pathologist and Section leader of unusual results.
  • Meets turnaround times.

  • The Medical Technologist performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for use in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Assures laboratory results are accurate and reported timely.
SUPERVISION:

Reports directly to the Assistant Director of Pathology

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Conducts chemical, hematological, microbiological, immunological, serological, and immunopharmacological analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other specimens submitted for laboratory testing to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Analyzes test results and enters findings in computer.
  • Trains and supervises students.
  • Performs duties according to age specific needs of patients.
  • Performs troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Call critical results within established guidelines.
  • Notifies Pathologist and Section leader of any unusual or unexpected findings.
  • Meets established turnaround times.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Successful completion of a one-year internship in medical technology.
  • Louisiana State License as CLS-Generalist; National Certification -MT (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Basic computer skills; operation of equipment/instruments.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
