Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a Mechatronics Test Engineer at the Texas Institute for Electronics in Austin, TX. You will prototype, assemble, test, and verify mechatronic subsystems used in next‑gen semiconductor equipment, working closely with a multidisciplinary team.

The role emphasizes hands-on build, testing, data-driven verification, CAD, PLC basics, and cross-functional communication. Standard 40‑hour weeks with strong UT benefits, located in Austin.

Qualifications

  • Mechatronics Test Engineer I: At least 4 years of experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or related disciplines.
  • Mechatronics Test Engineer II: At least 6 years of experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or related disciplines.
  • Mechatronics Test Engineer III: At least 8 years of experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or related disciplines.

Responsibilities

Purpose

The Mechatronics Test Engineer is needed for hands-on prototyping and testing of testbeds and subsystems for next generation semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Required Qualifications
  • Mechatronics Test Engineer I:

  • Mechatronics Test Engineer II:
    At least 6 years of prior work experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or other relevant disciplines

  • Mechatronics Test Engineer III:
    At least 8 years of prior work experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or other relevant disciplines

For all levels:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, or relevant disciplines
  • Hands-on and well versed in using hand tools, assembly, bring-up and testing
  • Experience writing and maintaining test scripts/programs and data analysis
  • Troubleshooting and electro-mechanical system debugging experience
  • Basic experience with PLC’s (Beckhoff, Allen Bradley or similar)
  • Basic CAD experience (CREO, SolidWorks or similar)
  • Basic PCB design experience (Altium Designer or similar)
  • Goal oriented and ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well in teams

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, or relevant disciplines
  • More than 4 years of prior work experience in electrical/mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, controls, test and measurement, or other relevant disciplines
  • Prior experience in one or more of the following areas: nanofabrication, precision machine design, mechatronics, systems and controls, instrumentation, optical systems design

Work Shift
