Job summary

Howmet Aerospace in Hampton, VA is seeking a mechatronics-minded technician to keep critical equipment running on 2nd or 3rd shifts after training on 1st shift. You will diagnose faults, perform preventive maintenance, and work with motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, and PLCs.

The role requires 5–7 years of electro-mechanical experience, an apprenticeship certification, and the ability to read blueprints and use precision instruments.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on motors, pneumatics, conveyors, and production machines.
  • Isolate faults using diagrams, manuals, and test tools; measure voltage, current, resistance, and capacitance.
  • Service 120Vac controls and 480Vac power systems.
  • Dismantle and rebuild equipment with hoists, cranes, and power/hand tools.
  • Plan and install wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatus; connect machines to power and inter-machine cabling.
  • Diagnose/replace transformers, motors, relays, switches, sensors, and PCBs.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems; service gauges and valves.
  • Fabricate parts with machine tools; measure with calipers/micrometers.
  • Rig assets for installation/relocation; operate a forklift; work at heights up to 50 feet.
  • Leverage PLC knowledge and robotics to shorten downtime; document actions and trends.

A conveyor is trending hot, a hydraulic press shows erratic pressure, and a robot faulted on a proximity sensor. You prioritize work, consult schematics, and move—from 480Vac diagnostics to pipework repairs to a quick motor bearing swap—restoring flow and safeguarding quality. That’s a typical win on 2nd shift (Mon–Fri, 3pm–11pm) or 3rd shift (Mon–Fri, 11pm–7am) after training on 1st (Mon–Fri, 7am–3pm).
