Job summary

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated is seeking a Mechanical Engineer specializing in stress and structural analysis for DOE and commercial nuclear power applications. The role involves creating CAE models using ANSYS and performing fatigue, static, dynamic, and thermal analyses; preparing design reports and calculations in accordance with ASME NQA-1 quality program.

The engineer will lead technical analyses, coordinate with support personnel, and contribute to design basis documents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience.
  • Experience in nuclear industry is a plus but not mandatory.

Job Description
Job Summary

Designs and analyzes mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. Primary role is as a stress and structural analyst analyzing structures, systems. and components used in the design of DOE and commercial nuclear power plants. Analyzes and conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication. Prepares calculations and reports including design reports. Utilizing both computer-aided engineering (CAE) and hand calculations the individual will prepare CAE models for fatigue, static and dynamic/ nonlinear structural, fracture analyses, with steady state and transient thermal, seismic loadings. Experience performing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is a plus. Working knowledge and experience using ANSYS and SolidWorks is required. Engineer will be required to prepare and review detailed analysis reports performed to the rigor of NQA-1 quality program.

  • Familiarity or experience designing and analyzing systems and equipment to the requirements of ASME III Div. 1, ASME III Div. 5, ASME VIII Siv 1 & 2, AISC or ASCE Design Codes and standards used in commercial or Government nuclear power or fuel processing plants a strong plus. Works on the design of systems and equipment that support the DOE and commercial nuclear, including Advanced Reactor or Small Modular Reactor (Generation III, III + and Generation IV), fusion reactor and nuclear fuel processing markets.
  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected determine methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Determines critical methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel.
  • Perform mechanical stress, structural and computational fluid dynamic analyses utilizing ANSYS. May be requested to use other FEA analysis tools such as NASTRAN/FEMAP but proficiency is not required as is required w/ ANSYS.
  • Write and review reports. white papers and prepare calculations and reports per the rigors of ASME NQA-1
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Design pressure vessels, heat exchangers and piping systems per ASME III Division 1, 3 & 5, ASME VIII Division 1 & 2, ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3.
  • Utilize ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code “Design by Analysis” and “Design by Rule” techniques.
  • Design and analyze pressure vessels using COMPRESS.
  • Piping design per ASME III, ASMEB31.1 and ASME B31.3 and analyze piping systems using AutoPipe.
  • Support through analysis the design and engineering of thermal fluid systems to include performing pressure drop, line sizing, valve sizing, pump, compressor, calculations.
  • Support through analysis the design of HVAC systems to include prepare heat and cooling load sizing calculations, fan and duct sizing calculations.
  • Proficient using SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation. Experience with CREO a plus.
  • Systems engineering per INCOSE, DOD 5000 or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288
  • Write Design Basis Documents (DBDs) and System Design Descriptions (SDD)
  • Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals and deadlines.
  • Prepare proposals, develop estimates including prepare Basis of Estimates (BOEs).
Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities but may provide technical leadership to lower-level engineers including carrying out lead responsibilities in accordance with applicable regulations and laws and the organization’s policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to training employees, planning, assigning, directing work and resolving technically related work problems. Function as a project engineer, systems engineer or lead engineer overseeing and/or integrating multidiscipline engineering teams.

Education And/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working within the nuclear industry is a plus but not mandatory.

Other Essential Duties

Follows all import/export requirements, consulting with facility import/export personnel as required.

Other Skills And Abilities
  • Basic Knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/6 Sigma/Kaizen
  • Knowledge of specific software (design, analysis, ERP…)
  • Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 a strong plus
Other Qualifications
  • US Citizenship with ability to attain/maintain government security clearance.
  • Ability to travel (domestically/internationally) approximately _+/-10__%.
  • Active Licensed Professional Engineer a plus.
  • ASME VIII Certifying Engineer and/or a Section III, Appendix XXIII Certifying Engineer a plus
