Job summary

Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated (JLL) is actively seeking a Mechanical SME for data center operations. The role focuses on HVAC system optimization, energy efficiency, and reliability across large facilities.

You will lead technical assessments, mentor technicians, and work with engineering teams and clients to deploy best practices. The position requires 4+ years in building engineering with HVAC, plumbing and electrical expertise, plus EPA 608 certification.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of technical experience in building engineering with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and production equipment repair.
  • Experience working in Data Centers/Raised Floor Environment.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Universal EPA 608 Certification.
  • CRAC (Liebert) maintenance and repair experience.
  • Licenses as required by authority having jurisdiction.
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • 2 years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in relevant craft skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems specific to data center operations.
  • Implement and maintain critical environment protocols and Method of Procedure (MOP) processes.
  • Conduct regular performance analyses of facility mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to improve data center efficiency and reliability.
  • Design and implement cooling solutions optimized for high-density server environments.
  • Analyze and enhance airflow management strategies.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules for all critical infrastructure.
  • Lead root cause analysis for any system failures or inefficiencies.
  • Implement corrective actions and system upgrades based on engineering assessments.
  • Be the first point of contact for service impacting events involving the mechanical plant.
  • Assist the team in troubleshooting and mitigating incidents.
  • Assist in the creation of root cause analysis (RCAs).
  • Be available for after-hours support regarding the mechanical plant (24x7).
  • Propose and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce PUE.
  • Evaluate and integrate green technologies suitable for data center operations.
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards (ASHRAE, ISO) and local regulations.
  • Oversee safety protocols and conduct regular safety audits.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of data center best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Mentor and guide a team of facility technicians and engineers.
  • Manage complex data center infrastructure projects, including expansions and upgrades.
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors and service providers to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Communicate effectively with executive management on infrastructure status and improvement plans.

Mechanical SME, Data Centers Expected compensation for this position: $54 – $60 USD per hour Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations. Schedule/shift: Day Shift, Monday-Friday

As a Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) at JLL, you will serve as the technical authority and strategic advisor for complex mechanical systems across a large hyperscale data center. This specialized role demands deep expertise in HVAC design, mechanical system optimization, and advanced building technologies while providing consultative support to engineering teams, clients, and project stakeholders. You will lead technical assessments, drive innovation initiatives, and establish best practices that enhance system performance, energy efficiency, and operational reliability across multiple facility types.

What your day-to-day will look like
Critical Systems Management
  • Oversee HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems specific to data center operations
  • Implement and maintain critical environment protocols and Method of Procedure (MOP) processes
  • Conduct regular performance analyses of facility mechanical and electrical systems
Mechanical Engineering Applications
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to improve data center efficiency and reliability
  • Design and implement cooling solutions optimized for high-density server environments
  • Analyze and enhance airflow management strategies
Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Develop and execute comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules for all critical infrastructure
  • Lead root cause analysis for any system failures or inefficiencies
  • Implement corrective actions and system upgrades based on engineering assessments
Incident Management
  • Be the first point of contact for service impacting events involving the mechanical plant
  • Assist the team in troubleshooting and mitigating incidents
  • Assist in the creation of root cause analysis (RCAs)
  • Be available for after-hours support regarding the mechanical plant. This includes 24x7 response
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
  • Propose and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
  • Evaluate and integrate green technologies suitable for data center operations
Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, ISO) and local regulations
  • Oversee safety protocols and conduct regular safety audits
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of data center best practices and emerging technologies
Team Leadership and Project Management
  • Mentor and guide a team of facility technicians and engineers
  • Manage complex data center infrastructure projects, including expansions and upgrades
Vendor and Stakeholder Management
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors and service providers to ensure optimal system performance
  • Communicate effectively with executive management on infrastructure status and improvement plans
Physical work requirements and work conditions
  • Lifting up to 80 lbs.
  • Working from heights.
  • Frequently climbing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, and working/extending overhead.
  • Working in adverse conditions (i.e., extreme cold, extreme hot).
  • Driving for long periods of time.
  • Climbing a ladder with a 300 lb weight limit while carrying a tool bag weighing approximately 20 lbs.
  • Climbing a ladder up to 30 feet.
  • Must be available for Call-in work and perform other duties as required.
Desired experience and technical skills - Required
  • 4+ years of technical experience in building engineering with a strong background in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and production equipment repair and maintenance
  • Experience working in Data Centers/Raised Floor Environment
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Universal EPA 608 Certification
  • CRAC (Liebert) maintenance and repair experience
  • Licenses as required by authority having jurisdiction
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel
  • 2 years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in relevant craft skills
  • Valid driver’s license
Preferred
  • Expertise in one specific craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations, Material Handling Equipment)
  • Familiarity with building automation systems and fire/life safety
