Job summary

University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a Mechanical Shop Manager (Facilities and Campus Services) to lead the Controls, Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Mechanical and Refrigeration shops. You will coordinate maintenance activities, manage staff and third-party contractors, and drive energy conservation programs and KPI-based improvements.

The role requires strong leadership, emergency-response experience, and proficiency with CMMS and AutoCAD.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or related field with 5 years of related experience, or an Associate’s degree with 7 years, or 9 years progressive management experience.
• At least 1 year as a manager/supervisor of a moderate-sized department.
• Strong leadership and experience improving operational efficiency of a large crew.
• Experience planning and responding to emergency failures in buildings with sophisticated systems.
• Proficiency with computers, MS Office, and CMMS such as TMA.

Responsibilities

• Ensure mechanical shop staffing and organization across multiple trades.
• Collaborate with trade supervisors, directors, engineers, user groups and customers.
• Manage backlogs and prioritize work; determine need for extra staff and overtime.
• Supervise staff and maintenance personnel in various facility operations.
• Manage after-hours on-call staff and respond to emergencies.
• Develop scope of work and estimates for deferred maintenance projects.
• Support energy conservation programs with Energy Management group.
• Review capital project plans for impact on operations and staffing.
• Use KPIs to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
