Job summary

Formosa-Plastic in Texas seeks a Unit Pipefitter Technician who can perform as a pipefitter and step-up supervisor for unit mechanical maintenance as needed.

You will execute work orders on piping systems, manage tools, perform root-cause analyses, and maintain detailed equipment histories while coordinating with engineers and supervisors. This role requires collaboration, safety focus, and readiness for backup coverage.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with 3+ years relevant field experience.
• Associate degree in industrial systems and engineering tech or Craftsmen certs (NCCER/NCCCO/NACE).
• Proficient use of basic hand tools and OEM manuals for troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

Job description

I. POSITION OBJECTIVE

To carry out the duties and responsibilities of a unit pipefitter technician. To be capable of fulfilling the role as a pipefitter as well as ability to perform as step-up Supervisor for Unit Mechanical Maintenance as needed.

II. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

• Execute assigned work orders in a safe, efficient manner with high-quality workmanship on piping, piping components, and stationary equipment.
• Manage, maintain, and ensure availability of required tools and equipment, including departmental and personal tools, in accordance with company policy and replacement requirements.
• Perform root-cause analysis of equipment failures and provide clear technical feedback and recommendations to engineers and supervisors regarding abnormal conditions and potential reliability issues.
• Complete and maintain accurate work documentation, including work orders, equipment histories, and historical files, ensuring records reflect failures, repairs, and modifications for effective maintenance planning and data integrity.
• Process material requisitions and warehouse commodity requests with proper account codes and cost center information while supporting cost control for repairs, expendables, and unit operations.
• Monitor and control maintenance-related costs, including overtime, expendable usage, and repair expenses within assigned areas of responsibility.
• Identify, communicate, and support resolution of abnormal operating conditions to minimize production loss, safety incidents, and environmental impacts.
• Promote and support continuous improvement by identifying cost-saving opportunities and process improvements in collaboration with engineering and supervision, ensuring compliance with company policies and operational requirements.
• Participate in cross-training activities to support backup coverage, including serving as a qualified relief steward, step-up supervisor, or shutdown/turnaround support as needed.
• Support contractor and unit-rate work as Person in Charge (PIC), ensuring safe execution, progress tracking, and quality control of assigned work scopes.
• Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, quality, regulatory, and company requirements, including NTG (Nothing Touching the Ground) and Operation Clean Sweep initiatives.
• Maintain technical proficiency through ongoing training, certification programs (including API, CUI, and inspection readiness), and knowledge of departmental SOPs.
• Work collaboratively in a team environment, maintain reliable attendance, and support operational needs outside normal shift hours when required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

III. QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous Related Experience Required
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant field experience, dependent upon education.
• Education
  • High School graduate or equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant field experience; or an associate's degree in industrial systems and engineering technology or Craftsmen Certification i.e., NCCER, NCCCO, NACE, etc. or equivalent.
• Technical Skills Required to Perform This Job
  • Use of basic hand tools required to repair equipment.
  • Daily use of historical files to help trouble shoot equipment and to store data collected for future use.
  • Daily use of AS400 for looking up parts and their availability and for Dayforce training.
  • Frequently use of OEM Manuals when problems arise to find manufacturer information on equipment and to find phone contacts if verbal assistance is needed.
  • Use of rolling stock - such as forklift, manlift, drott, truck used daily to pull equipment for shop work staging tools and equipment at job site, access to overhead work, and transportation to various units in the plant and to inspect progress and quality of work being performed.
  • Shop tools-grinder, drill press, etc. used daily to help perform regular maintenance on equipment in the shop.
  • Precision tools used daily for precise measurements in fabrication and repair of piping, vessels and other stationary equipment.
