Position Overview

The Mechanical Project Manager is responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously and for the planning, coordination, execution, financial performance, safety, quality, and successful completion of assigned mechanical construction projects involving piping and/or sheet metal operations. The position manages projects from preconstruction and initial planning through completion and closeout, with accountability for schedule, budget, labor performance, contract requirements, and customer satisfaction.

  • Ensure field personnel understand the company's scope of work, project requirements, and applicable subcontractor scopes.
  • Purchase equipment and materials through approved company purchasing procedures; manage project buyout and verify vendor invoices against purchase orders.
  • Plan and coordinate material, equipment, and subcontractor requirements sufficiently in advance to prevent delays to field operations and the project schedule.
  • Evaluate self-perform versus subcontracting strategies based on manpower availability, schedule, cost, expertise, and project requirements.
  • Track scope changes and change-order opportunities and maintain required project documentation, permits, submittals, operating instructions, insurance certificates, and closeout documents.
  • Review project costs weekly, prepare monthly cost projections, support timely billing, and assist with collections consistent with contract requirements.
  • Visit assigned jobsites regularly, generally at least once per week, and monitor installation progress, workmanship, safety, schedule, quality, and manpower needs.

SAFETY AND FIELD LEADERSHIP
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies, project-specific safety requirements, and applicable OSHA requirements on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with the Safety Director and review project safety plans, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required briefings.
  • Supervise assigned field personnel and provide clear expectations regarding productivity, quality, schedule, conduct, and company policies.
  • Identify current and future staffing needs and work with Operations and Human Resources to recruit, develop, retain, and appropriately deploy field personnel.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations and provide timely coaching and corrective feedback.

  • Review plans and specifications and assist with quantity takeoffs and development of labor, material, equipment, supplier, and subcontractor costs as needed.
  • Support labor estimates using anticipated manpower, productivity, wage rates, schedule requirements, and project conditions.
  • Assist with bid packages, purchase orders, subcontracts, contract review, manpower planning, project files, and transition from estimating to operations.
  • Protect the company's scope and pricing by identifying changes or additions to the proposal and ensuring they are properly documented and priced.
  • Participate in post-project reviews comparing estimated versus actual labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs; apply lessons learned to improve future estimating and project execution.
