Big-D Mission Critical is looking for an experienced Mechanical Project Manager. The Mechanical Project Manager is responsible for overseeing all mechanical aspects of complex mission-critical data center construction projects from preconstruction through commissioning and turnover. This role serves as the primary liaison between project teams, owners, engineers, subcontractors, commissioning agents, and field leadership to ensure all mechanical systems are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards.
This position can be based in Reno, NV or in a traveling role.
Project Management
- Lead mechanical scope execution for hyperscale and enterprise data center construction projects.
- Develop and manage mechanical project budgets, schedules, procurement plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate mechanical activities with operations, field supervision, commissioning teams, and trade partners.
- Monitor project progress and proactively identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and maintain schedule commitments.
- Manage subcontractor performance, contract compliance, change orders, and cost controls.
Preconstruction and Planning
- Participate in design reviews and constructability evaluations.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment selections, and design documents.
- Identify value engineering opportunities and recommend cost-saving solutions.
- Collaborate with engineering teams and owners during project planning and design phases.
- Develop procurement schedules for long-lead mechanical equipment and materials.
Mechanical Systems Oversight
- Oversee installation of:
- Chilled water systems
- Cooling towers
- CRAH and CRAC units
- HVAC systems
- Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Controls and instrumentation
- Piping systems
- Pumps and hydronic systems
- Fuel systems
- Fire protection interfaces
- Ensure mechanical systems are installed according to design specifications and industry standards.
- Verify equipment startup requirements are understood and executed properly.
Commissioning and Turnover
- Support integrated systems testing and commissioning activities.
- Coordinate with commissioning authorities, owner representatives, and facility operations teams.
- Lead resolution of commissioning deficiencies and mechanical system issues.
- Ensure completion and turnover of all mechanical documentation, O&M manuals, and training requirements.
- Support final owner acceptance and project closeout activities.
Project Management
- Manage mechanical project budgets and forecasting.
- Track labor productivity, procurement costs, and subcontractor expenditures.
- Review and approve invoices, pay applications, and change orders.
- Prepare monthly cost reports and executive project updates.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks impacting project performance.
Safety and Quality
- Promote and support a culture of safety excellence.
- Ensure compliance with company safety programs and client-specific requirements.
- Conduct mechanical quality inspections and audits.
- Drive quality assurance and quality control processes throughout project execution.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
- 7+ years of mechanical construction project management experience.
- 3+ years of experience supporting mission-critical or data center construction projects.
- Strong understanding of large-scale HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Experience managing mechanical subcontractors and vendors.
- Demonstrated success delivering projects exceeding $50M in construction value.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and scheduling software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience on hyperscale data center projects.
- Mechanical engineering background.
- LEED Accreditation.
- PMP Certification.
- Experience working with mission critical clients.
- Knowledge of commissioning and integrated systems testing processes.
