Mechanical Project Lead for Greenfield Pharma Plant

Job summary

Impellam Group in Richmond, VA is seeking a Project Engineer (Mechanical) for a 100% onsite, 5-day weekly role on a large greenfield pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion. You will lead mechanical workstreams from feasibility through design, construction, commissioning, qualification, startup, and turnover on a 3-year capital program.

Requires 7+ years in pharma/regulated manufacturing, a Bachelor's in Mechanical/Chemical, and hands-on experience with HVAC, utilities, piping, and equipment

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or a related engineering discipline.
• 7+ years in roles such as Project Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, or Project Manager in pharmaceutical, biotech, life sciences, or regulated manufacturing.
• Experience supporting mid to large capital projects from design through construction, commissioning, and qualification.
• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical facility infrastructure and mechanical systems (HVAC, clean utilities, plant utilities, piping, equipment).
• Experience leading equipment startup, commissioning, turnover, and URS/design docs.

Responsibilities

• Manage multiple capital projects from conceptual design through startup as the mechanical engineering lead.
• Develop URS documents and project design basis with stakeholders.
• Oversee external firms, construction managers, contractors, and vendors; review and approve deliverables.
• Coordinate shutdowns, tie-ins, and integrations with minimal operational impact.
• Manage schedules, budgets, forecasts, change orders, and risk; report progress to leadership.
• Support RFPs, contractor selection, and procurement; mentor junior engineers.
