Job description

You engineer the systems that make buildings work.

You enjoy designing HVAC and plumbing systems that make buildings comfortable, efficient, and functional. At TETER, you'll apply your technical expertise while leading projects, collaborating with architects and engineers, and mentoring the next generation of mechanical engineers.

How You'll Make an Impact

As a Mechanical Project Engineer, you'll lead the design and coordination of HVAC and plumbing systems for a variety of building projects. Working alongside architects, engineers, clients, and consultants, you'll help deliver innovative, high-quality solutions while guiding projects from design through construction.

In this role, you'll:

  • Lead the design and documentation of HVAC and plumbing systems that meet client goals, project requirements, and applicable codes.

  • Perform and oversee engineering calculations, equipment selection, and technical analyses that support thoughtful building system design.

  • Coordinate with architects, structural, electrical, civil, and other project team members to develop integrated design solutions.

  • Guide project scope, schedules, and discipline‑specific budgets while helping projects stay on track.

  • Provide construction support through submittal reviews, RFIs, field observations, and problem‑solving during construction.

  • Mentor EITs, junior engineers, and drafters by sharing technical knowledge, providing guidance, and supporting their professional growth.

  • Contribute to quality by participating in QA/QC reviews and continuously improving design standards and project delivery.

You'll Thrive in This Role If You...
  • Enjoy solving complex building systems challenges with practical, well‑engineered solutions.

  • Communicate proactively and collaborate effectively with clients, consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Take ownership of your work while balancing technical excellence, project priorities, and client expectations.

  • Enjoy mentoring others and helping project teams succeed.

  • Are organized, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple projects and competing priorities.

  • Continuously look for ways to improve designs, processes, and team performance.

What You Bring
  • Mechanical Project Engineer I: Typically 3–4 years of experience as a Project Engineer following Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, leading mid‑sized projects or supporting larger, more complex projects.

  • Mechanical Project Engineer II: Typically 7–10 years of experience as a Project Engineer following Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, including responsibility for leading large or complex projects.

  • Five (5) or more years of overall mechanical engineering experience, including experience directing or mentoring support staff.

  • Current registration as a Mechanical Professional Engineer in California, or the ability to obtain California registration within six months of employment.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, or other building projects.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD; working knowledge of Revit/BIM strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of Title 24, ASHRAE, the California Mechanical Code, and other applicable building codes and standards.

  • Strong communication, organization, and project coordination skills.
