Job summary

NES Fircroft in Houston is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer for a long-term contract to support two project sites in Texas and Louisiana. The role will involve leading third-party engineering firms, coordinating with disciplines, and ensuring project execution aligns with cost and schedule targets.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of capital project experience, familiarity with retrofit projects in manufacturing and with both rotating and static equipment.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering preferred (LA or TX not specifically required).
• 10 years of engineering experience delivering capital projects with contract engineering firms and oversight of engineering teams.
• Experience with retrofit projects in existing manufacturing plants.
• Experience with equipment in hard asset manufacturing environments (chemical, oil & gas, cement, paper).
• Experience with rotating equipment (fans, blowers, high speed mills, compressors) and static equipment (storage tanks, silos).
• Experience with construction and equipment installation in manufacturing plants.
• Experience with solids handling equipment and piping design for high temperature.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and oversight of the third-party engineering firm and its subcontractors through all project phases (engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup).
• Coordinate with project team, operations, and the third-party firm to align scope, cost, schedule and execution.
• Perform technical reviews of mechanical and piping deliverables to ensure compliance with codes and design intent.
• Review vendor documentation and submittals for conformity with specs and operability.
• Evaluate existing systems to integrate new equipment while maintaining safe operations.
• Ensure compliance with licensing and stamping requirements in relevant states.
• Provide direction to optimize designs, reduce capital cost, and improve operability and reliability.
• Review packages for completeness and readiness before procurement and construction.
• Participate in constructability, operability, maintainability and value engineering reviews.
• Assess risks and changes, and propose mitigation strategies.
• Support procurement, construction, commissioning, startup and closeout with field issue resolution.

New Role!! Mechanical Project Engineer - Long Term Contract - Houston

NES Fircroft is actively seeking Mechanical Engineers in Houston for a long-term Project Engineering role which will focus on two separate project sites with our client in Texas and Louisiana. Role will be full-time in Houston, with travel as needed to both of these project site locations.

Project Overview

Our Client is seeking to contract a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the execution of a Battery Materials manufacturing project. The project scope is divided between two facilities in Franklin, Louisiana (Canal Facility) and Pampa, Texas.

The major systems at Canal include static and rotating process equipment (milling systems, solids handling equipment, fans, blowers, compressors, cooling systems, etc.), piping, and building services.

The Canal project has completed the early development phase and has advanced to the pre-FEED Capital Phase 2 (Alternatives Analysis).

The major systems at Pampa include static and rotating process equipment (electrical furnaces, solids handling equipment, drying systems, fans, blowers, compressors, etc.), piping, and building services.

The Pampa project has completed the pre-FEED Capital Phase 2, (Alternatives Analysis) and has advanced to the FEED Capital Phase 3, (Front End Engineering and Design).

Both parts of the project will be executed with a 3rd party Engineering Firm.

Requirements

• BS in Mechanical Engineering


• Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering preferred (Louisiana or Texas PE not specifically required)


• 10 Years engineering experience delivering capital projects with contract engineering firms and oversight of engineering teams


• Experience with retrofit projects in existing manufacturing plants


• Experience with equipment in a hard asset manufacturing environment, chemical, oil & gas, cement, paper, etc. is preferred


• Experience with both rotating equipment (fans, blowers, high speed mills, compressors), and static equipment (storage tanks, and silos) is required


• Experience with construction and equipment installation in chemical/oil & gas/cement/paper manufacturing plants is desired


• Experience with solids handling (metering, storage, conveying) and solids handling equipment is highly desired


• Experience with piping design and materials specification for high temperature is preferred.


• Experience collaborating with Process, Instrumentation & Controls, Civil/Structural/Architectural and Electrical disciplines


• Ability to travel to the Project sites, and Third-Party Engineering Firm offices


• High level of proficiency with project controls (cost and schedule) programs

Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and oversight of the Third-Party Engineering Firm and its subcontractors throughout all phases of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup


• Coordinate with the project team, operations, and the Third-Party Engineering Firm to ensure timely communication and alignment of technical, scope, cost, schedule, and project execution activities


• Perform comprehensive technical reviews of mechanical and piping engineering deliverables, including but not limited to drawings, 3D models, specifications, calculations, datasheets, and engineering reports, to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, and engineering practices


• Review and approve equipment vendor documentation, calculations, fabrication drawings, and technical submittals to verify compliance with project specifications, design intent, operability, maintainability, and long-term reliability


• Evaluate existing mechanical systems, utilities, and infrastructure to ensure seamless integration of new equipment and facilities while maintaining safe, reliable, and uninterrupted plant operations


• Verify compliance with applicable industry codes, standards, and regulations, and ensure engineering deliverables satisfy Louisiana and Texas Professional Engineering licensing and stamping requirements


• Provide technical direction and challenge the engineering contractor to optimize designs by identifying opportunities to eliminate over-design, correct under-design, improve constructability, reduce capital cost, and enhance long-term operability, maintainability, and reliability


• Review engineering packages for completeness, technical accuracy, interdisciplinary coordination, and readiness prior to procurement, bid issuance, and construction.


• Participate in constructability, operability, maintainability, and value engineering reviews, providing recommendations to improve safety, project execution, lifecycle performance, and overall project value


• Evaluate technical risks, engineering changes, and design deviations, assessing impacts to scope, cost, schedule, quality, safety, and plant operations while recommending appropriate mitigation strategies


• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and project closeout by resolving field engineering issues and coordinating technical interfaces between disciplines


• Actively participate in Process Safety Management (PSM) activities, including Management of Change (MOC), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and resolution of associated action items
