Job summary

City and County of Denver (CCD) seeks a qualified Plans Review Engineer to oversee complex mechanical and plumbing plan reviews for Denver International Airport (DEN) projects and other citywide buildings. The role requires a PE license and deep knowledge of Denver Building Code compliance.

You’ll collaborate with design professionals, inspectors, and multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring safe, sustainable buildings while supporting the agency’s CPD mission and goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required by Colorado.
  • 3 years of post-licensure engineering experience.
  • Experience with Denver Building Code review.
  • Ability to communicate with inspectors and design professionals.

Responsibilities

Location & Schedule

This position is located at the Wellington Webb Building, located at 201 W Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80202.

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees’ physical work location is based upon the position’s job duties and requirements, customer service and responsiveness, team and individual performance, and business needs and requirements. Our current practice requires in-office work for all employees for a minimum of three days per week. Business needs and initial onboarding may require additional days in the office.

9/80 flex schedule optional after successful completion of six month probationary period.

As the Mechanical & Plumbing Plans Review Engineer, you will perform advanced professional engineering work in the following areas directly related to Denver International Airport (“DEN”) projects as well as projects not related to DEN.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Efficiently and accurately review complex mechanical and plumbing construction drawings and specifications for compliance with the Denver Building Code for new and existing buildings
  • Support Denver International Airport (DEN) as the DEN mech/plumb plans reviewer, including assisting with complex mechanical and plumbing plan reviews specific to DEN, which requires a strong background in commercial systems and code application
  • Perform city-wide mechanical and plumbing plan review, as part of the overall workload.
  • Assist design professionals with engineering standards as well as contractors, owners, managers, and staff. Coordinating with other engineering disciplines, such as fire protection, utilities, and health
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team as well as work independently reporting directly to the Engineer/Architect Supervisor for the section
  • Assist inspectors with difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments
  • Participate in recommending and establishing policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and specifications and evaluates the effectiveness of existing methods, policies, procedures, and proposed local and national model code modifications and issues
  • Interact with the public, professional design consultants, project managers, contractors, and elected officials to communicate permit application procedures and regulatory and code requirements and interpretations

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Direct mechanical and plumbing design experience with a wide variety of buildings (multi-family, commercial, and airport)
  • Experience in design and construction of high-performance buildings, at minimum experience utilizing IECC and ASHRAE 90.1. (Appendix G);
  • Experience using Bluebeam Revu
  • Familiarity with kitchen and kitchen exhaust design, hazardous exhaust systems and lab design, as well as refrigerated storage systems
  • Certification as a LEED professional preferred; ICC Building Plans Review Examiner B3 Certificate preferred but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; Ability to communicate effectively – verbally and in writing; Ability to understand, interpret, enforce, and communicate the intent of the codes
  • Efficiently demonstrates excellent time/work management skills; Self-motivated and motivated to help others; Dependable and can maintain confidentiality
  • Works well under pressure and able to multitask; Strong attention to detail and highly organized

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional engineering experience after obtaining a Professional Engineering (PE) license. (Some positions may require experience in a specific engineering area). Additional directly related engineering/architecture experience can be substituted for up to two (2) years of the three (3) years of post-licensed experience.

Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application.

Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
