Navarro Research & Engineering is recruiting a Mechanical Piping Engineer (3917) in Oak Ridge, TN. The role focuses on the design and integration of high-temperature piping systems for custom process equipment and related industrial facilities.

You will coordinate with mechanical, process, electrical, controls, fabrication, and operations teams to develop safe, reliable piping solutions and support project deliverables across DOE and industry programs.

Qualifications

• Experience with mechanical piping design for high-temperature process systems.
• Strong understanding of piping design principles, routing, supports, materials, insulation, and documentation.
• Ability to support multidisciplinary engineering packages and coordinate with design, fabrication, installation, and operations teams.
• Experience applying piping codes, standards, safety requirements, and documentation controls.

Responsibilities

• Design and support high-temperature piping systems, piping layouts, pipe supports, expansion features, connections, and equipment interfaces.
• Develop piping specifications, design criteria, calculations, material selections, drawings, isometrics, and technical documentation for custom process systems.
• Evaluate thermal expansion, material compatibility, insulation, routing, support loads, maintainability, safety, and fabrication constraints.
• Coordinate piping design requirements with high-temperature vessels, furnaces, electrochemical systems, instrumentation, controls, electrical power, and facility interfaces.
• Support design reviews, procurement, vendor coordination, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and configuration control activities.
• Identify piping design risks, interface conflicts, constructability issues, and technical constraints that may affect safety, reliability, cost, or schedule.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Piping Engineer will support the design and integration of high-temperature piping systems associated with custom process equipment, molten salt systems, furnace systems, and related industrial equipment. This role will develop safe, reliable, and maintainable piping solutions while coordinating closely with mechanical equipment, process, electrical, controls, fabrication, and operations teams.

Requirements

• Experience with mechanical piping design for high-temperature process systems, industrial equipment, chemical processing, molten salt systems, or similar applications.

• Strong understanding of piping design principles, pipe routing, supports, thermal expansion, materials, insulation, design documentation, and equipment interfaces.

• Ability to support multidisciplinary engineering packages and coordinate technical requirements with design, fabrication, installation, and operations teams.

• Experience applying applicable piping codes, standards, quality requirements, safety expectations, and documentation controls.

• Ability to work in a complex technical environment requiring careful coordination, practical solutions, and strict attention to safety and quality.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with molten salt piping, high-temperature metallic or specialty materials, furnace interfaces, or advanced energy process systems.

• Experience with pipe stress considerations, thermal growth management, specialty valves, heat tracing, insulation, or custom fabricated piping assemblies.

• Experience supporting DOE, NNSA, nuclear, laboratory, chemical process, or highly regulated industrial facility projects.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and directly relevant mechanical piping design experience may be considered.
