Job summary

Freudenberg Performance Materials in Durham, NC is looking for a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join our on-site team. You will perform proactive maintenance, repair and upgrades on a range of process equipment, from blowers and HVAC to conveyors and extruders.

You’ll work with electrical, process, and reliability staff to minimize downtime and meet safety standards. The role requires 0–5 years in industrial maintenance, a two-year technical or related degree (certifications helpful), and

Qualifications

  • Two-year technical degree preferred but not required for extensive experience.
  • 0-5 years of technical support experience in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with CMMS for preventive maintenance tracking.
  • Experience in pipefitting, sheet metal fabrication and welding preferred.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills; able to work overtime and on-call.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled maintenance to identify and prevent failure points in operations equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and upgrade process equipment including blowers, chillers, compressors, boilers, and HVAC systems.
  • Understand rotating equipment failure modes and apply lubrication, alignment, balancing, and inspections.
  • Contribute to maintenance management system through root cause analysis and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with electrical, process, and reliability teams to prioritize tasks for the plant.
  • Support ISO/TS quality management by maintaining equipment and preventing deviations.
  • Assist in design, installation, start-up, and shut down of new or modified equipment per safety standards.
  • Maintain high workmanship standards and 5S housekeeping.
  • Participate in rotating on-call duties and provide maintenance expertise.
  • Provide on-the-job training to maintenance staff to improve reliability and safety.

Mechanical Maintenance Technician
Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled maintenance support to proactively identify and prevent failure points in operations equipment by interpreting operator feedback, understanding machine status indications and functions, and recommending action.
  • Maintain, repair, and recommend upgrades for process equipment including blowers, chillers, compressors, blowers, boilers, various types of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, industrial HVAC systems, extruders, heaters, dehumidifiers, web conveying, winding, slitting, and other equipment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rotating equipment failure modes and maintenance techniques to identify, prevent and correct. Familiarity with best practices for lubrication, precision alignment & balancing, and proactive inspections to identify failures prior to failure itself.
  • Contribute to improving our maintenance management system through Root Cause Analysis and resolving errors that occur with a preventive mindset.
  • Collaborate as a multidisciplinary team member with electrical, process, and reliability colleagues to prioritize tasks and investments to meet operational needs and initiatives for an assigned area of the plant.
  • Support and engage in our ISO/TS quality management system by maintaining equipment to a high standard of care and contributing feedback to the maintenance management system to prevent any deviations in critical-to-quality processes.
  • Support maintaining plant utilities, including steam, compressed air, chilled water, cooling tower waters, exhaust fans, and associated equipment systems.
  • Assist engineering in the design, installation, start up, shut down, and planned maintenance of new or modified equipment in accordance with US and Freudenberg safety procedures and standards.
  • Maintain high standards for workmanship and housekeeping before, during, and after work, and contribute to cleanliness and 5S adherence in shared areas.
  • Contribute to rotating on-call duties providing maintenance expertise and hands-on support when needed.
  • Provide skills training to other maintenance personnel to enhance equipment reliability and safety.
Qualifications
  • A two-year technical degree in Industrial Systems or related field focusing on machine maintenance is preferred but not required in lieu of professional experience. Certificates in PLCs, Hydraulics, and/or Pneumatics are beneficial.
  • 0-5 years of technical support experience working in an industrial environment, prior experience in extrusion, plastics, and web handling or winding is a plus.
  • Experience and computer skills within a Computerized Maintenance Management System for preventive maintenance work tracking and corrective requests is preferred.
  • Experience and training in pipefitting, sheet metal fabrication and welding are preferred.
  • Good communications skills, both verbal and written, and ability to collaborate effectively with team members of varying levels of technical experience.
  • Ability to work overtime or non-regular hours when needed to support 24/7 operations. Must be able to assist in on-call rotation.
  • Ability to obtain Powered Industrial Truck and Arial Lift Equipment certifications on site.
