Maintenance Operations, a branch of the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Division, provides comprehensive maintenance services in support of the University's operations.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code * 51.215. Applications will be reviewed online by the hiring department. This is a 40‑hour work week; five 8‑hour days, or possible four 10‑hour days with schedule to be discussed with supervisor.

Purpose

Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostic testing, and repairs of building systems and components.

Responsibilities
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs of mechanical systems to include pumps, fans, compressors, and specialty equipment. Acquires field data from equipment, tags, and applies equipment labels.
  • Acquires parts and maintains appropriate stock of material and supplies.
  • Assists electricians, plumbers, refrigeration mechanics, carpenters, and others as needed to meet shop goals and objectives.
  • Performs basic electrical tasks, such as the replacement of lamps and ballasts.
  • Utilizes precision instruments to determine flow rates, pressure drop, etc. to ensure proper alignment, installation, and operation of belts, chains, couplings, bearings, and other drive components.
  • Reads blueprints, works from specifications, and follows instructions both written and oral. Performs daily written explanations on work orders to document work done and to describe equipment problems.
Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Two years of experience in applicable maintenance or construction trade. Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate Degree. Graduation from technical or vocational trade school. More than three years experience in applicable maintenance or construction trade. Experience using diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, power quality meters, accelerometers, etc. Experience at the University of Texas or in a university setting. Experience in more than one craft or trade. Working knowledge of computerized systems. Ability to read and understand technical manuals and blueprints related to trade. Ability to write reports summarizing work activities. Demonstrated stable work history. Successful completion of the Leader Development Program.

Salary Range

$45,760 + depending on qualifications

Additional Working Conditions
  • This position and associated job duties have been designated as essential during extraordinary and emergency situations when the university is closed. Essential personnel must maintain contact with their supervisor and report to work as regularly scheduled unless directed otherwise.
  • Required to operate an electronic device such as an iPhone, iPad, or laptop/desktop computer to perform and fulfill time reporting and work management requirements. Work management requirements include receiving work assignments, updating work orders, and other functions as required.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
  • May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend.
  • May be required to operate job related equipment.
  • May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
  • May drive University vehicles. If driving University vehicles, may be required to maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • Participate in on‑call program.
Work Shift

40 hours a week, five 8‑hour days, or possibly four 10‑hour days with schedule to be determined with supervisor. Some overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays possible.
