Job summary

Comfort Systems USA is seeking a skilled Mechanic to support mechanical service and retrofit work, including sheet metal modifications, piping tasks, gasket and valve work, and LOTO compliance on active job sites.

You will read drawings, follow torque requirements, use torque wrenches and hand tools, and maintain safety with PPE and site rules. Some travel to construction sites is required; work in mechanical rooms and rooftops as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sheet metal modifications and installation to support equipment and duct interfaces.
  • Replace gaskets, prepare flange faces, align flanges, and verify sealing surfaces.
  • Complete chiller valve replacements and perform checks per requirements.
  • Install flanged pipe couplings and torque to specification.
  • Execute LOTO: isolate energy sources and apply lockout/tagout.
  • Read job documentation to complete tasks correctly the first time.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area; use PPE and follow policies.
  • Communicate status and needs to supervisor; document work performed.
  • Use torque wrenches and standard mechanical hand/power tools properly.
  • Assist troubleshooting and basic mechanical tasks; escalate when needed.

Job description

Position Summary

The Mechanic supports mechanical service and retrofit work by performing sheet metal modifications/installation and mechanical piping tasks including gasket replacement, valve replacements, flanged coupling installation and torquing, and strict Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) execution. This role works safely, follows job specifications and torque requirements, and produces high-quality work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and active job sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform sheet metal modification and installation to support mechanical equipment, ducting interfaces, and field-fit needs.
  • Remove and replace pipe gaskets; prepare flange faces, align flanges, and verify proper fit-up and sealing surfaces.
  • Complete chiller valve replacements (isolation support, removal/replacement, reassembly, and operational checks per job requirements).
  • Install flanged pipe couplings and hardware; torque to specification using appropriate tools and documented torque requirements.
  • Execute LOTO: identify energy sources, isolate equipment, apply lockout/tagout devices, and verify zero-energy state per procedure.
  • Read and work from job documentation (drawings, specs, work orders) to complete tasks correctly the first time.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area; use PPE; follow all safety policies and jobsite rules.
  • Communicate job status, material needs, and field issues to the supervisor/foreman; document completed work as required.
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment properly, including torque wrenches and standard mechanical hand/power tools.
  • Support troubleshooting and basic mechanical service tasks within your skillset; elevate issues when needed.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in mechanical service, piping, HVAC mechanical, plumbing, or industrial maintenance
  • Working knowledge of:
  • Flanges, gaskets, valves, and mechanical connections
  • Proper tool use including torque tools
  • Jobsite safety practices and hazard awareness
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work safely in active job environments.
  • Must be able to travel to construction sites as needed
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions; effective verbal communication.
  • Compliance with company dress code and appearance standards.
  • Visual acuity for reading small print and identifying details on equipment and drawings.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands for handling materials and tools.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs frequently and over long distances (30+ feet).
  • Comfortable working at heights over 30 feet and climbing ladders or stairs.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces; perform repetitive motions as needed.
  • Work in varying weather conditions and environments.
