Job summary

City of Montgomery is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to perform skilled inspection work ensuring compliance with ordinances and regulations governing installations. The role involves field inspections, determining compliance, and coordinating with supervisors and stakeholders to enforce codes.

The position requires a strong technical background, the ability to make independent decisions, and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair challenges. General office duties are also involved.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years’ experience in residential and commercial installation or inspection of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems including one (1) year of experience in a leadership capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects the installation of the mechanical components of commercial kitchen appliances, heating and air conditioning systems, gas and oil piping, gas-fired and oil-fired appliances and ventilating equipment.
  • Confers with supervisors, contractors, architects, engineers, owners and the public regarding questions relative to inspection and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Performs general office functions and works under general supervision and may be reviewed in cases involving permits and enforcement of applicable codes.

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled inspectionwork in securing compliance with ordinances and regulations governing existingand new gas and mechanical installations. The work involves responsibility forperforming field and office activities in the City's gas and mechanicalinspection program and securing compliance with legally establishedspecifications and requirements. The inspector works independently in the fieldand is responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, soundjudgment and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair problems.The work responsibilities are: inspects the installation of the mechanicalcomponents of commercial kitchen appliances, heating and air conditioningequipment, gas and oil piping, gas-fired and oil-fired appliances andventilating equipment; confers with supervisors, contractors, architects,engineers, owners and the public regarding questions relative to inspection andenforcement of applicable codes and ordinances; and performs general officefunctions. The work is subject to general supervision and may be reviewed incases involving permits and enforcement of applicable codes. General directionis received from the Chief Plumbing Inspector or Assistant Chief Plumbing andGas Inspector.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school
  • diploma or G.E.D. Five (5) years’ experience in residential and commercial installation or inspection of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems including one (1) year of experience in a leadership capacity.

Special Requirements
  • Must have or obtain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to operate a City vehicle in the performance of mechanical and gas inspections.
  • Certification within one (1) year of employment as a Mechanical Inspector (Commercial) through a recognized certification program in compliance with the International Code Council.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical ability to stoop, bend, crawl or climb ladders or flights of stairs as needed to make inspections.
Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Inspections Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
