Job summary

Bechtel is the EPCM contractor at Thacker Pass, Nevada, overseeing mechanical activities and supervising field teams. The Mechanical Field Engineer provides technical direction to both direct hires and subcontractors on site.

Project Overview

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far - enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year.
As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team contractors engineering and building the facility. We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services.
Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway.
The project is located in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.
Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Field Engineer reports to the Area Field Engineer/Project Field Engineer and is responsible for the technical oversight of all Mechanical activities in the assigned area. The selected applicant shall provide technical directions to the direct hire and subcontractor work force, as well as supervision.

Major Responsibilities

• Must have experience with construction in all areas of mechanical installation.


• Coordinate with supervision the work schedule and any material deliveries required


• Complete training requirements assigned.


• Preparation of mechanical installation work packages


• Inspection of field installations and completion of associated documentation.


• Responsible for quantity take-off, control, reporting and forecasting for all mechanical items.


• Prepare field change documentation and as-built documentation as required.


• Interface with engineering office to resolve design and constructability issue.


• Assist superintendents and subcontractors in constructability and quality issues.


• Work with the suppliers to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications.


• Prepare material requisitions, coordinate, and review vendor drawings.


• Work with Procurement's expediting team to ensure the delivery of vendor materials to support the projects schedule.


• Interpret design drawings.


• Complete material take-offs.


• Assure that equipment is stored properly to ensure environmental protection.


• Material receipt inspections as required.


• Reviews specifications, inspection reports, delivery schedules, instruction manuals, and technical data.


• Assist with preparation of construction estimates.


• Recommend design or installation improvements to improve safety on the project.

Education and Experience Requirements

• University/BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with less than 1 year of field mechanical engineering experience is desired, or 4-5 years of relevant experience

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Understanding of applicable Bechtel work processes including Standard Work Process Procedures is preferred,


• Familiarity with Bechtel Standard Applications (BSAPs) including ACONEX, TEAMWorks, Bechtel Productivity System, PTR, eSub and other automation tools which are used on Bechtel projects is an asset.


• Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.


• Understanding of applicable industry codes and standards.
