Job summary

Boom Supersonic is seeking a hands-on leader to own turbomachinery structures and mechanical design, from disks and airfoils to seals and rotordynamics. You will set rigor, build the team, and stay close enough to analyze results, ensuring integrity of rotating hardware.

The role requires deep turbomachinery experience, strong stress/vibration fundamentals, GD&T expertise, and a track record of shipping hard hardware under constraints.

Qualifications

  • Deep experience in turbomachinery or rotating-hardware structures and mechanical design.
  • First‑principles command of stress and vibration: disk burst, LCF, HCF, TMF, rotordynamics, with the judgment to bound a result by hand.
  • Strong tolerancing and GD&T with real awareness of how designs get made.
  • A track record of building and leading strong technical teams and shipping hard hardware under real constraints.
  • The instinct to lead the work, not just the org, and ideally to code and automate.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the structures and mechanical team across stress, mechanical design, bearings and seals, turbine design, and rotordynamics
  • Own the structural integrity calls and non-conformance dispositions on rotating hardware
  • Set the analytical standard: right-size fidelity to where the program is, know the limits of FEA and material data, and catch results that are wrong or too optimistic
  • Stay in the work, turning the crank on the hardest problems, and drive automation with rigor
  • Bring structural analysis and mechanical design in‑house and build the tooling and standards the team runs on
  • Grow the team, sourcing and developing specialists across disciplines, and raise the bar with every hire

Job description

Boom Supersonic designed, built, and flew XB-1, the first civil supersonic jet made in America, and has sold Overture, the supersonic airliner, to major airlines. That same team is now building Symphony, the engine that powers Overture, and adapting Superpower, its industrial gas turbine, to power AI data centers.

Not a traditional engineering leadership job

This role builds the group that owns turbomachinery structures and mechanical design at Boom, starting from a small, strong core. You will own the technical integrity of the engine's rotating and static hardware: disks, cases, airfoils, blisks, and the mechanical systems around them. This is a hands‑on leadership seat. You set the rigor bar and build the team, and you stay close enough to the analysis to know when a result is wrong.

What you'll do
  • Build and lead the structures and mechanical team across stress, mechanical design, bearings and seals, turbine design, and rotordynamics
  • Own the structural integrity calls and non-conformance dispositions on rotating hardware
  • Set the analytical standard: right‑size fidelity to where the program is, know the limits of FEA and material data, and catch results that are wrong or too optimistic
You probably have
  • Deep experience in turbomachinery or rotating-hardware structures and mechanical design
  • First‑principles command of stress and vibration: disk burst, LCF, HCF, TMF, and rotordynamics, with the judgment to bound a result by hand
  • Strong tolerancing and GD&T with real awareness of how designs get made
  • A track record of building and leading strong technical teams and shipping hard hardware under real constraints
  • The instinct to lead the work, not just the org, and ideally to code and automate
What will set you apart
  • Supersonic or gas turbine engine experience, and Part 33 exposure
  • A history of standing up a capability or a team from near zero
  • Programming and analysis‑automation background
  • A strong bias to move fast and take smart risk in a high‑standard, prototype‑pace environment
Compensation

P5 Level - Typically 15 + years of experience - Base salary range: $160,000 – $203,000

Actual compensation will vary based on factors including, but not limited to, location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package. Other elements may include long‑term incentives/equity, flexible PTO, and a suite of progressive benefits designed to support our employees’ well‑being and growth.

There is no set deadline to apply for this job opportunity. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the search is no longer active.

The mission

Engineering roles at Boom are unlike anything else in aerospace or energy: designing a supersonic airliner from first principles, developing advanced propulsion systems, scaling complex hardware programs in a modern manufacturing environment, and building breakthrough industrial turbines to power the next generation of

AI data centers. These aren't jobs. They are career‑defining opportunities. Some may even find their calling.

This job is demanding and rewarding. At some companies, you can choose to work long, smart, or hard. At Boom, you'll be doing all three.

You’ll move with urgency. You’ll manage ambiguity. You’ll operate at a high standard. And your work will be visible to company leadership, including the founder. If you want a comfortable engineering role where you run processes and rely on executing procedures defined long ago, look elsewhere.

If you want to be part of a team that could be remembered a century from now, keep reading.

The primary reward of this role is the work itself: partnering with extraordinary people to design and build breakthrough machines. You’ll also be well compensated, with competitive cash compensation and meaningful equity grants with significant upside. This is a chance to build more than a product. It’s a chance to build a company that history will remember.

Why Boom

Boom is building one of the most ambitious industrial programs of this century. The work is hard, the pace is fast, and the expectations are high.

In return, you’ll get real ownership, the chance to work with exceptional teammates, and the opportunity to help build a product line capable of powering the future of supersonic flight and next‑generation energy systems.
