Job Overview

As a Mechanical Engineer on our Wire Harness Team at BlackSky you will develop wiring interconnect solutions for spacecraft components, instrumentation, and ground support equipment that fully integrate them into functional systems. You will support the full program lifecycle—from concept to production—and be involved in the development, design, test, and production of our satellite systems, components, and supporting hardware. You will develop initial concepts of space-vehicle wire harness system layouts and ground support equipment based on requirements and objectives, and then mature those concepts through CAD modeling, material selection, manufacturing documentation, and production support. You will interact with flight, prototype, and ground support hardware as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary technical team focused on producing state‑of‑the‑art satellites. This position reports to the Director of Mechanical Engineering and is a hybrid role based out of our Tukwila, WA office.

Responsibilities

• Design spacecraft wire harness and cable physical routing and support structures with CAD software (Creo).
• Generate and maintain engineering and manufacturing documentation such as schematics, flat‑pattern drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of material; document design and analysis data in technical reports, presentations, and manufacturing systems.
• Support manufacturing and production teams by providing design intent, resolving build issues, reviewing nonconformance reports, and implementing corrective actions.
• Develop tooling, fixtures, and ground support equipment to support integration and test activities.
• Apply engineering judgment to make informed decisions when data is incomplete, balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability, and schedule.
• Work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver space‑vehicle designs, production plans, and test strategies that support program cost, schedule, and quality goals.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a similar engineering discipline.
• 5+ years of professional experience in a mechanical engineering role.
• Experience using CAD software to develop wire harness models and manufacturing drawings.
• Demonstrable experience maturing designs from initial concepts to detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA‑A‑620.
• Experience with PTC Creo and Windchill software.
• Must be a U.S. Person.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with Creo Schematics.
• Experience working on satellite or launch vehicle systems or components.
• Familiarity with material selection for space environments.
• Experience using CAD software to develop models and manufacturing drawings of mechanical structures and assemblies.
• Working knowledge of NASA‑STD 8739.4.
• Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerance specification.

Salary Range

The anticipated salary range for candidates in the Great Seattle Area, WA is $100,000 – $130,000 per year. The final compensation package offered will be dependent on specific background and education. BlackSky is a multi‑state employer, and this pay scale may not reflect salary ranges in other states or locations outside the Great Seattle Area.
