Job description

Mechanical Engineer, Optical Inter-Satellite Link, Amazon LEO

Job ID: 10506438 | Amazon Kuiper Manufacturing Enterprises LLC

Amazon LEO is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer with a broad background in the design, analysis, reliability, and lifetime of mechanical systems and avionics.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience performing design, analysis, sizing, and selection of mechanical mechanisms and components including gears, bearings, lubricants, motors, and gearboxes for space environments.

This is a hands-on role for a highly collaborative individual that combines technical and analytical capabilities to convert analytic trade studies to a qualified physical design, while optimizing for high volume production and meeting cross discipline requirements.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
  • Use knowledge and experience in understanding, collaborating and trading complex inputs from multiple other disciplines (Electrical, RF, Optics, Thermal, Dynamics, Mechanisms, Materials, Manufacturing, Assembly, and Test) to guide the team and arrive at a viable technical approach
  • Generate detailed designs with CAD assemblies/components and drawings as deliverables.
  • Coordinate with other engineers, manufacturing and assembly to ensure design intent and cost effectiveness of production are achieved
  • Documentation and presentation of materials for technical design reviews.
  • Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance, for space hardware
A day in the life

You will tackle challenging, novel situations every day and have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations. You should be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and relish the idea of solving problems that haven't been solved at scale before.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience with CAD.
  • 5+ years of experience with design and development of hardware at scale (High End Precision Mechanisms desired)
  • 5+ years of experience with development, test, deployment of aerospace systems.
  • Experience with specifying/justifying margins and test sequences, and qualifying space systems.
  • Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience in DFM and manufacturing process development. Evaluates manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools
  • 6+ years of experience with design and development of hardware at scale (High End Precision Mechanisms desired)
  • Experience with NX, TeamCenter
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary discussions between Hardware, Reliability, and Firmware teams to define and drive scope and clarity of work, and reach optimum system level trade-offs
  • Experienced with Issue tracking applications (JIRA, TRAC)
  • Strong time and task management skills with consistent attention to detail
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
