Job description

Progressive Design, Inc. is currently seeking an entrepreneurial spirited Mechanical Engineer. This is a full time/direct hire position located in Midlothian, Virginia (Richmond, VA area).

Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering duties on assigned projects including equipment specifications, process piping, material handling and conveying, HVAC, and other mechanically related engineering and design.
  • Manage the engineering and design process from inception to completion, including leading projects, work planning, directing and overseeing designers and engineers, conducting design reviews (internal and with the client), and checking deliverables such as calculations, drawings, and technical reports.
  • Direct customer interface and coordination.
  • Develop study reports, bids, proposals, scopes of work, P&IDs, estimates, schedules, material lists, design concepts, scope change documents, and other project documentation per customer and corporate guidelines.
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Exercise innovative cost‑efficiency approaches in the project design to reduce construction costs and increase productivity.
  • Size and specify typical process equipment such as pumps, tanks, chemical reactors, heat exchangers, chillers, condensers, mixers, etc.
  • Perform calculations to size and specify process, service, and utility piping systems.
  • Perform calculations to size and specify safety relief devices.
  • Review equipment submittals for accuracy and validate against specifications.
  • Maintain familiarity with industrial codes such as ASME and API.
  • Visit customer sites for field work.
  • Assist in commissioning and startup.
Requirements
  • Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree from an ABET accredited school.
  • 10+ years of heavy industrial experience in a design or project engineering role.
  • Virginia Professional Engineer preferred but not required.
  • Heavy industrial experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm.
  • Process safety experience (PHAs, HAZOPs, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Inherently Safer Design, Documentation to support process safety, etc.).
  • Current working knowledge of safety relief device code requirements, calculations, sizing and system design procedures.
  • Current working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles with an emphasis on fluid mechanics, mass and heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
  • Working knowledge of incorporating safety, maintainability, constructability, and operational requirements into the design process.
  • Technically sound and willing to mentor junior engineers.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong ethics and corporate loyalty.

  • Must be a US citizen, have a valid U.S. Driver's license, clear background, and pass a drug test.
