Job summary

Torus Inc. in Salt Lake City is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 to design, validate, and assemble subsystems enabling modular energy storage.

You'll work with experienced engineers across mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to learn how design choices affect cost, reliability, and manufacturability. This on-site internship runs May–August, with the possibility of part-time extension up to ~20 hrs/week.

Qualifications

• Completed Freshman year (2 semesters).

Mechanical Engineer Intern (Summer 2027)

About the Role

At Torus, we're building the world's first mesh energy infrastructure, systems that protect communities, reduce costs, and strengthen the grid for decades to come. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern , you'll contribute to the design, validation, and building of the sub-systems that make resilient, scalable energy storage possible.

This internship sits at the intersection of hands-on engineering and systems thinking. You'll learn how mechanical engineering decisions ripple across the full product lifecycle—from early concept through manufacturing—and how to balance cost, reliability, manufacturability, and quality as interconnected problems. You'll develop the kind of thinking that separates good engineers from great ones: understanding not just what you're building, but why it matters and how it fits into the bigger picture.

Internship Responsibilities

• Build engineering experience by contributing to the assembly and design of products like Torus Pulse (battery energy storage) and/or Torus Spin (flywheel energy storage) products. You'll work on actual products, not simulations.
• Learn how energy systems actually work by partnering with cross-functional teams—electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and controls—so you understand how your design decisions ripple through the entire platform.
• Ship design work that matters. Develop initial design projects or assembly fixture designs that accelerate manufacturing and directly improve how our systems perform in the field.

Experience

• Continuing Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• Completed Freshman year (2 semesters).
• Strong academic performance, typically reflected by a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Basic understanding of industry principles and practices relevant to the department of interest.
• CAD Experience working with mechanical assemblies and drawings in SOLIDWORKS.
• Machine shop and or welding experience is preferred.
• Working knowledge of Google Office Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software.
• Previous internship or work experience in a related field is a plus, but not required.
• Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges.
• Ability to commit to the full duration of the internship program.
• Availability to work the scheduled hours determined by the department's needs.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

Location + Travel

Onsite at GigaOne warehouse in Salt Lake City (84040), working in air-conditioned warehouse/manufacturing and cleanroom environments. Break area equipped with refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and vending machines. Occasional work may be required at South Salt Lake HQ or Springville R&D facilities (partially air-conditioned).

Duration

Temporary from May - August (We can flex with your school schedule.) Possibility to extend as a part-time employee ~20 hrs/wk.

Compensation

$22-28/hour depending on experience (Note: We have the flexibility to hire at different levels, which may impact the corresponding pay range.)

Work Authorization

Applicants must already have the legal authorization to work in the US without requiring any employer sponsorship.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly operates a computer and other peripheral office equipment such as a printer or mouse.
• Must have the ability to occasionally safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Must be capable of standing, bending, and executing repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time.
• Ability to read, identify, observe and recognize details, color-coding and fine print at close range on associated engineering drawings.
• Ability to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, respiratory protective equipment with proper seal, coveralls, ear protection, gloves, eye protection & safety helmet.
• Ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.
• Ability to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Must report to work reliably and with the ability to use full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute your job.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.
