Job summary

Heron Power is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our Fall term, Aug/Sep through December or longer. You will design, develop, and validate medium-voltage power electronics systems alongside senior engineers, performing CAD, analysis, prototyping, testing, and hands-on fabrication.

You will collaborate with electrical, test, and manufacturing teams and external suppliers, owning parts and assemblies from concept to high-volume production.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (and maintain student status).
• Strong history of designing mechanical parts or assemblies through projects or portfolios.
• Proficiency with at least one 3D CAD program (CATIA V6/3DX preferred).
• Strong engineering fundamentals including basic electronics understanding.
• Familiarity with a first principles design approach.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Design parts and assemblies for power converters—enclosures, plastics, heatsinks, insulators, transformers, connectors, PCBAs, bolted joints, and adhesive joints.
• Use manufacturing processes such as fastening, sheet metal bending, stamping, injection molding, diecasting, extruding, and dispensing.
• Apply first principles design to optimize parts through analysis (structural, thermal, tolerance).
• Create 3D designs and 2D drawings using CATIA V6/3DX.
• Perform prototyping and testing.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and reliability teams, plus external partners.
