Job summary

Vulcan Elements seeks a Mechanical Engineer to own mechanical utility design and installation across a major manufacturing expansion in Durham, NC, with potential growth to leadership of mechanical systems assets.

You will design, install, commission, and hand over critical utility networks (water, gases, power, piping) and collaborate with EPCs, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure safe, reliable operation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
• 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience in industrial/manufacturing environments.
• Strong understanding of mechanical utility systems, piping design, fluid systems, and industrial equipment.
• Proficiency with CAD tools (AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks) and ability to read/interpret drawings and P&IDs.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, specification, and installation of mechanical utility systems: chilled water, cooling water, domestic water, compressed air, argon, nitrogen, and hydrogen distribution.
• Collaborate with EPC contractors on mechanical layouts, P&IDs, equipment specs, and installation packages using CAD tools.
• Manage mechanical installation activities with EPC, GC, contractors, OEMs, and internal teams.
• Oversee commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and performance validation of utilities and equipment.
• Ensure proper mechanical utility integration for production equipment and system readiness.
• Perform field inspections for quality, safety and engineering compliance.
• Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and technical documentation.
• Support procurement, cost tracking, and reporting.
• Lead or participate in continuous improvement for reliability and energy efficiency.
• Ensure OSHA and safety standards are followed throughout project phases.
• Communicate status, risks, and milestones to leadership and cross-functional teams.
• Provide technical support during startup and transition to operations.
