Job summary

Applied Materials in Austin is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and optimize mechanical tooling, layouts, and assemblies across the product lifecycle. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, and coordinate procurement of parts for design projects.

You will apply physics, math, and materials science to resolve mechanical problems and enable handling and assembly of sub-assemblies. A strong background in robotics and automation is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • 6–7 years of robotics/automation systems experience.
  • Experience with hardware and software testing and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis and issue resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Support automation systems engineering projects spanning electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
  • Apply robotics expertise to analyze and design system solutions for semiconductor equipment.
  • Evaluate requirements with respect to feasibility, risks, and operations.
  • Manage software and mechanical scope to meet OEM robot vendor specs on time and budget.
  • Design, build, and test physical stands; develop testing software for qualification.
  • Maintain quality and reliability requirements across the product lifecycle.
  • Review mechanical, software, and electrical designs for material handling robots.
  • Assist in system integration and troubleshooting in manufacturing labs.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations– and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.

Role Responsibilities
  • Support automation systems engineering projects that have a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, and software design, and understand the underlying system implications.
  • Leverage robotics subject matter expertise in performing systems engineering analyses in support of semiconductor equipment product development.
  • Leverage robotics subject matter expertise and interpersonal skills to evaluate & negotiate requirements from internal and external customers with consideration for feasibility, technical risks, and operational factors.
  • Manage projects consisting of software and mechanical scope to ensure OEM robot vendors meet specific requirements on time and at cost.
  • Perform software and mechanical testing and qualification of OEM supplied robots. Design & build physical test stands and develop testing software in support of qualification activities.
  • Maintain accoutability for quality and reliability requirements throughout the product lifecycle. Drive closure of quality problems using structured methodologies.
  • Evaluate mechanical, software & electrical designs within material handling robots, and similar mechanisms, with respect to requirements.
  • Support System Integration and troubleshooting of automation modules during the manufacturing and application lab (cleanroom) operations of new product designs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 6-7 years of experience
  • Demonstrated experience in robotics and/or automation systems engineering and integration, including hardware testing, software testing, and complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • 8 years of experience
  • Project management and supplier management experience
  • Experience with Semiconductor Wafer Handling

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
