Job summary

Whelen Engineering in Chester, CT seeks an experienced mechanical engineer to analyze and optimize products, from concept through testing and validation. You will apply FEA, CFD, and thermal analyses, develop analytical models in MATLAB/Python, and contribute to cross-functional engineering teams to deliver robust, manufacturable designs.

The role requires strong collaboration, problem solving and communication skills, with a focus on continuous learning and applying advanced engineering methods

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 8+ years of experience.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation (CFD).
  • Background in Structural Analysis and Thermal Analysis.
  • Experience using FEM for stress/deflection, vibration, and performing LCF, HCF, Fracture Mechanics or Kinematics analyses.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or Python (or equivalent) for developing analytical models and performing data acquisition and post-processing.
  • Experience with performing test-model correlation and test-based characterization of critical modelling input parameters.
  • Proficient knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with engineering software including SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent.
  • Experience with PDM and PLM software and processes is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical support for preliminary and detailed designs through development, validation and manufacturing.
  • Use FEA and classical methods for strength, stress/deflection, vibration, fatigue life and kinematic analyses.
  • Predict temperatures, heat transfer and fluid characteristics via simulations.
  • Perform test-model correlation testing to validate analytical predictions.
  • Collaborate with environmental test engineers on tests to validate models and predictions.
  • Prepare technical reports for internal teams, management, and customers.
  • Stay current with advancements in thermal analysis and materials technology.
  • Create and document structural and thermal analytical methods for Whelen Engineering.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for less experienced engineers.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Test, Electrical Engineering and QA to solve engineering issues.

Description

Responsible for using analytical tools to assess and optimize the structural and thermal constraints of Whelen products as well as concepting and designing new products or product enhancement features. Candidate will follow the design process starting with concept initiation and follow it through total product assembly and functionality testing. The process will be facilitated by leveraging the understanding of core concepts in Mechanical Engineering. Candidate engages in continuous learning of the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide analytical support for preliminary & detailed designs, through development, validation, certification, manufacturing and operational service
  • Use FEA and classical methods for strength, stress/deflection, vibration, fatigue life, kinematic and optimization analyses to meet design requirements
  • Use simulations and classical methods to predict temperatures, heat transfer, and fluid characteristics as needed to meet design requirements
  • Perform test-model correlation testing to validate analytical predictions
  • Work closely with environmental test engineers to support the design, instrumentation selection, execution, and data processing of tests to validate models and predictions
  • Prepare technical reports to present findings to internal teams, management, and external customers
  • Stay current with advancements in thermal analysis techniques, materials technology, and industry standards
  • Create and document the Structural and Thermal analytical methods for Whelen Engineering
  • Provide oversight and technical guidance for less experienced engineers
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Electrical Engineering and QA to be able to solve problems related to Engineering issues

Education and Experience
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field w/ 8+ years’ experience or MA/MS degree w/5-6+ years’ experience
