Job summary

OKSI is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III in Torrance, CA to design, analyze, and optimize mechanical systems across autonomous platforms and sensor systems. You will work with cross-functional teams to develop integrated solutions from concept through fielded systems.

The role emphasizes hands-on prototyping, testing, and production-ready design (DFM). A Bachelor's in mechanical engineering and 4+ years' experience are required; a Master’s is a plus. Hybrid schedule and career growth available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field (Master's preferred).
• 4+ years of relevant work experience.
• CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
• Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics.
• Experience with FEA, optomechanical design, thermal management or CFD is a plus.
• Familiarity with ISO/ASME manufacturing standards.
• Basic machine shop experience (soldering, lathe, mill).

Responsibilities

• Lead projects and mentor junior engineers; ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
• Troubleshoot design, performance, mechanical, optical, or manufacturing problems.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer III contributes to multiple projects across all phases, concept, design, development, implementation, and revisions, in a diverse set of technological fields including autonomous vehicle command and control, object detection, scientific data analysis, and real-time mission operations support.

What You’ll Do

• Design, analyze, and optimize mechanical systems, components, and assemblies using CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)


• Lead and manage engineering projects, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery that meets performance requirements; provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers


• Troubleshoot design, performance, mechanical, optical, or manufacturing problems and implement corrective actions


• Work closely with optical, electrical, software, and systems engineering teams to develop integrated solutions


• Develop, fabricate, test, and iterate on prototypes; plan and conduct lab and/or field performance testing


• Prepare technical reports, design documentation, and project plans


• Contribute to process improvements and stay current with industry trends and best practices


• Support the transition from prototype to production, including DFM, tolerance management, and supplier collaboration

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field (Master's preferred)


• Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience


• Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar)


• Strong grounding in mechanical engineering fundamentals (thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, materials science)


• Experience with FEA, optomechanical design, thermal management, or CFD tools is a plus


• Familiarity with manufacturing techniques and industry standards (ISO, ASME)


• Basic machine shop experience (soldering, lathe, mill) a plus


• Self-motivated, hands-on, and comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Nice to Have

• Master's degree


• Experience with FEA, optomechanical design, thermal management, lightweight structures, or CFD tools


• Experience flying or able to fly drones


• Computer/electronics assembly experience


• Basic machine shop experience (soldering, lathe, mill, etc.)

Compensation And Benefits

• $122,000 - $165,000 annually. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications and the budget allocated for this role.
