Position Information

What You Will Do
  • Make independent reviews of plans and specifications of moderately difficult projects including routine or uncomplicated renovations and alterations for three or more family dwellings, apartments and commercial buildings involving moderately difficult computations, legal and technical interpretations of the Plumbing Code and/or other pertinent codes or regulations.
  • Approve the issuance of building permits for plumbing work upon satisfaction that plans and specifications meet requirements.
  • Consult architects, mechanical engineers and the public on questions relating to Plumbing Code and other pertinent codes.
  • Assist Plumbing Inspectors on the provisions of the Plumbing Code and other pertinent codes.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience Requirement

Two years of non‑registered professional (post‑bachelor's degree) Mechanical Engineering experience.

Substitution: A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a regionally‑accredited college or university will substitute for one year of non‑registered professional mechanical engineering experience.

Non‑qualifying Experience

Having the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as qualifying for the position. Your overall experience must have been of such scope, level and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. Work experience while in an engineering student intern position will not be creditable as equivalent to professional engineering experience. We use the Hawaii DCCA's standard of “lawful experience” towards attaining your Professional Engineering license as our framework for qualifying experience.
