Job description

Please Note: To conform with the United States Government Space Technology Export Regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., conditional resident, asylee or refugee (protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

The Skylark product line is focused on the rapid design, build, and test of cutting-edge active phased array antennas (AESA) for terrestrial and airborne applications. Current programs span high-power, large-scale ground terminals for missile defense to commercial airline and helicopter connectivity solutions.

We are looking to add a Mechanical Design Engineer II to our team. If you enjoy working in a startup environment and are passionate about developing leading-edge hardware for satellites, spacecraft, and aerospace systems, we would like to hear from you.

In this position, you will be responsible for mechanical designs of CesiumAstro products through all phases of the development process. The ideal candidate will be proficient in electronics packaging design, mechanical simulations and analyses, computer-aided design (CAD), spacecraft mechanical interfaces, and environmental qualification of electronic assemblies.

As a CesiumAstro mechanical team member, you will be responsible for mechanical designs from initial concept design through requirements definition, detailed design, simulation, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support of CesiumAstro's products. Required skills and experience include thermal management design, precision machining principles, thermal simulation and analysis, shock and vibration simulation and analysis, electromagnetic interference/compatibility (EMI/EMC) mitigation techniques, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), finite element analysis (FEA), and cost analysis to develop, validate, and optimize mechanical designs.

The successful candidate will also present engineering design review materials to our customers and leadership team. As such, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, structures, mechanisms, and hardware supporting products and manufacturing activities.
  • Perform engineering analyses, calculations, tolerance studies, structural evaluations, and design trade studies supporting mechanical engineering activities.
  • Review engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, and technical documentation while supporting mechanical design decisions.
  • Perform mechanical testing, verification, qualification, and validation activities supporting engineering and manufacturing objectives.
  • Analyze engineering data, test results, inspection findings, and manufacturing information to identify trends and recommend solutions.
  • Support root cause investigations, engineering changes, corrective actions, and design improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and operations teams to support mechanical engineering activities.
  • Develop engineering drawings, 3D models, technical reports, design documentation, bills of materials, and engineering change documentation supporting engineering decisions.
  • Participate in design reviews, engineering investigations, manufacturing reviews, and product development activities.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, design records, configuration-controlled technical data, and product documentation.
  • Apply mechanical engineering methodologies, engineering standards, company procedures, and customer requirements throughout product development.
  • Recommend improvements that enhance product performance, manufacturability, reliability, quality, and engineering effectiveness.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university or institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of industry experience in design and analysis of electronics packaging, including thermal, vibration, and stress dynamics or in spacecraft structures and mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with electronics assemblies and experience working closely with electrical engineers.
  • Experience with professional mechanical and FEA CAD tools, such as Solidworks Simulation.
  • Experience with CNC manufacturing.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
