Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan in Morenci, AZ, seeks a Mechanical Engineer to lead and support multiple engineering projects on-site. You will guide design, budgeting, and deployment of systems, ensuring safety, cost control and environmental protection.

The role requires a Mechanical Engineering degree with 3+ years (or a Master’s with 2+ years) of related experience, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work in a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline; 3 years of related experience.
• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline; 2 years of related experience.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of Mechanical Engineering.
• Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical advice and guidance for Mechanical Engineering projects and programs, ensuring timely, cost-effective conclusions.
• Participates as a team member to review, investigate and develop recommendations for assigned projects.
• Contributes to Mechanical Engineering design plans and requirements.
• Serves as Project Manager or Technical Advisor on small-to-medium site projects, including new or modified systems.
• Responsible for project development, budgeting, AR preparation, contract management, electrical engineering, purchasing, construction, cost controls, quality controls, implementation, and start-up.
• Develops projects utilizing new technology to upgrade safety, efficiency, cost controls and environmental protection.
• Collaborates with Operations and Maintenance to improve safety, efficiency and environmental protection.
• Provides technical support to assigned groups/departments at site.
• Assists with implementation of new technology and coordinates project activities with departments to ensure completion.
• Ensures documentation for projects is prepared and reviewed for accuracy.
• Responsible for completion of project phase within budget, time, and cost constraints.
• Performs other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.

What You Will Do

• Provides technical advice and guidance for all phases of assigned Mechanical Engineering projects and programs, ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at appropriate cost.
• Participates as a team member to review, investigate and develop appropriate recommendations regarding assigned Engineering projects
• Contributes to Mechanical Engineering design plans and requirements
• Serves as Project Manager or Technical Advisor, on small-to-medium site Engineering projects, which may include the development of new or modification to existing systems and processes
• Responsibilities include project development, budgeting, appropriation request (AR) preparation, contract management, electrical engineering, purchasing, construction, cost controls, quality controls, implementation, and start up
• Develops Mechanical Engineering projects utilizing new technology to constantly upgrade and improve site safety, efficiencies, cost controls, quality controls and protection of the environment
• Participates with Operations and Maintenance departments and other Engineering staff in problem solving efforts to improve safety, efficiencies, cost controls and protection of the environment
• Provides technical and Mechanical Engineering support to assigned groups/departments at site
• Assists Operations and Maintenance departments with the implementation of new technology
• Coordinates project activities with Operations and Maintenance departments to facilitate project completion
• Ensures appropriate documentation for assigned projects are prepared and reviews documentation for accuracy
• Responsible for ensuring successful completion of the assigned project phase within the budget time and cost constraints
• Performs other duties as required

What You Bring To Freeport

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline andthree (3) years of related experience in Engineering,OR
• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering disciplineandtwo (2) years of related experience in Engineering
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of Mechanical Engineering

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with all phases of Engineering Projects for Industrial Facilities
• Working knowledge of Pumping Systems as well as Hydraulic Analysis
• Experience on a mining and mining processing environment: Operation, Maintenance and Equipment
• What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently$87,500-$120,000.This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
