Job description

Company Description

At Exum Instruments, we are transforming chemical analysis by developing powerful, intuitive, and accessible scientific instruments—such as our flagship Massbox®. We believe that advanced instrumentation shouldn't be confined to massive, specialized labs; it should be everywhere innovation happens. We thrive in a high-paced, collaborative environment where creative problem-solving and rapid execution drive our success.

Role Description

We are seeking a driven and talented Mechanical Engineer II to join our growing engineering team. The role is based on-site in Lakewood, CO in a full-time capacity. In this role, you will play a critical part in designing and optimizing ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components and complex electromechanical systems. We harness a blend of rapid prototyping and production techniques to take designs from concept to reality. You'll be responsible for design ideation, prototyping, validation testing, and production verification. If you have a passion for precision mechanics, a deep understanding of vacuum technology, and exceptional CAD skills, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • UHV Design: Design, model, and optimize ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components, chambers, manifolds, optomechanical systems, and integrated electromechanical sub-systems.
  • Rapid Prototyping & Production: Leverage rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, in-house machining) alongside traditional manufacturing techniques to quickly test, iterate, and finalize production-ready designs.
  • Documentation & Detail: Create thorough fabrication drawings, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and assembly documentation while maintaining strict revision control.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and production teams to ensure seamless instrument integration and manufacturability (DFM/DFA).
  • Testing & Validation: Develop and execute test plans for vacuum integrity, thermal performance, and mechanical reliability.
Qualifications
  • Strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering with experience in optomechanical systems, UHV design practices, micro precision engineering, and using the metric system like a normal human being.
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed GD&T drawings. SolidWorks and PDM experience preferred.
  • Experience with Product Development Lifecycle, including R&D, prototyping, testing, and iterative design improvement.
  • Project Management skills to plan tasks, track progress, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Microsoft 365 proficiency including Word, OneNote, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis; experience in instrumentation or scientific equipment is a plus.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary respective to Denver, CO ($85,000-$100,000) per year based on experience
  • Unlimited flexible paid time off (PTO)
  • A hands-on role with a high degree of ownership and impact on cutting-edge scientific technology
