Job summary

Fuss & O’Neill in Hartford, CT is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our MEP team, focusing on HVAC design across commercial and institutional projects. This role combines design, analysis, and field support in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
• 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably HVAC consulting.
• EIT certification or progress toward EIT preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; Revit or BIM software preferred.
• Experience with HVAC load calculation software such as Trane TRACE.

Responsibilities

• Develop HVAC designs and engineering solutions for commercial and institutional projects, including load calculations and equipment sizing.
• Create and update mechanical drawings and models using AutoCAD and Revit, coordinating with other disciplines.
• Conduct weekly field investigations and site visits and support construction administration through submittals, RFIs, and reviews.
• Manage design tasks independently while coordinating with senior engineers on decisions and quality control.
• Prepare calculations, specifications, reports, and documentation while applying codes (IBC, IMC, ASHRAE, NFPA, IECC).
• Communicate effectively with project teams, clients, and contractors, and support plumbing and energy-efficiency projects as opportunities arise.

Fuss & O’Neill, a leading New England-based consulting firm, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our growing MEP team. This is an exciting opportunity for a mechanical engineer with HVAC consulting experience to take on increasing responsibility across a diverse range of building projects while working alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary project teams.

The Mechanical Engineer will focus primarily on HVAC engineering and design, with opportunities to contribute to plumbing and energy-efficiency projects. This position combines technical design and analysis with field investigations and construction support, providing the opportunity to work across multiple phases of project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop HVAC designs and engineering solutions for commercial, institutional, and other building projects, including load calculations, equipment sizing, and technical analysis.
• Create and update mechanical drawings and models using AutoCAD and Revit, coordinating designs with architectural, structural, electrical, and other disciplines.
• Conduct weekly field investigations and site visits, and support construction administration through site observations, submittal reviews, RFIs, and related project activities.
• Manage assigned design tasks independently while collaborating with senior engineers on technical decisions, quality control, and final design review.
• Prepare calculations, specifications, technical reports, and project documentation while applying applicable codes and standards, including IBC, IMC, ASHRAE, NFPA, and IECC.
• Communicate effectively with project teams, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders, while supporting plumbing and energy-efficiency projects as opportunities arise.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
• 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably within an HVAC consulting environment.
• EIT certification or progress toward obtaining an EIT preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with Revit or other BIM software preferred
• Experience with HVAC load calculation software, such as Trane TRACE, preferred.
• Experience with plumbing design, energy efficiency, or energy modeling is a plus.
• Willingness to work approximately 3–4 days per week in the office and travel periodically for fieldwork.

The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company’s good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
