Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Mechanical Designer – Federal to design HVAC, piping, and plumbing for government facilities in the Seattle area. Hybrid work model with office presence required for collaboration.

You will collaborate with engineers and project teams, perform system analyses, develop design documents, and ensure compliance with UFC, IMC, UMC, IPC, NFPA, and LEED requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred).
  • Licensed Professional Engineer preferred.
  • 4+ years of professional experience or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical and plumbing systems for built environments with limited direction.

Your Opportunity

Mechanical Designer – Federal draws on strong buildings engineering knowledge and industry experience to consistently produce project deliverables that meet project requirements and project manager and client expectations. Work consists of advanced mechanical design for the built environment including but not limited to HVAC, piping and plumbing, and the use of digital practice technology such as Revit as well as mechanical engineering specific computer applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • With limited direction from the Project Manager or Project Engineer, design mechanical and plumbing systems for the built environment.
  • Collaborate with project managers and supporting design staff as part of a coordinated design team.
  • Support project requirements including basis‑of‑design narratives, opinions‑of‑probable‑costs estimates, drawing documentation, systems design and technical specifications.
  • Research, prepare and present mechanical system options and clear communication of associated impacts to the overall project goals to the internal design team.
  • Prepare required calculations to meet project requirements for review by project manager or senior engineer.
  • Use IES software to produce building loads and heating and cooling block loads.
  • Handle development of design and document preparation in written and computer‑aided design formats and ensure that contract documents are delivered in a timely fashion while meeting required codes and quality assurance standards.
  • Participate in design conflict resolution and questions and provide recommendations to address issues and add value.
  • Assist in field investigations and analyze existing conditions to develop comprehensive engineering solutions.
  • Assist system studies such as Energy Life Cycle Cost Analysis.
  • Actively participate in the development of design staff through work on projects as well as serving as a trainer, mentor and resource for junior design staff.
  • Review drawings and research code issues to comply with national, city, state, and county regulations.
  • Attend project design coordination meetings with other disciplines, clients and stakeholders.
  • Compile energy modelling results and subsequent impacts to the proposed mechanical systems to evaluation by Project Manager.
  • Provide construction administration support such as reviewing contractor RFI’s, issuing field directives, perform construction observation and punch lists, review contractor change requests.
  • Maintain and expand current knowledge of technologies, trends and the markets in which we work as they apply to the applicable project types and continually strengthen skills.
  • Actively participate in meetings, initiatives, and projects that support studio and firm‑wide goals.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Working knowledge for buildings mechanical engineering, including but not limited to HVAC, piping, plumbing and controls.
  • Ability to prepare and review detailed drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to integrate design elements with architectural, civil, structural, ICT, electrical and other disciplines to deliver a coordinated, constructible design.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including UFC, IMC, UMC, IPC, UPC, NFPA, IBC, and ASHRAE, as well as LEED and green building requirements.
  • Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into deliverables.
  • Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.
  • Knowledge of specialty engineering applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively support technical project consultation with key clients and project stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Building Information Modelling software; in particular, Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Prefer experience with Newforma, Trane Trace, IES, Bluebeam.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean MVR.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.
  • 4+ years of related professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated skills.
Auxiliary Qualifications
  • Qualifications listed below, while not necessarily a requirement for this position in each circumstance, provide additional depth and value to the role: Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP.
  • WELL certified.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
Office Location and Schedule
  • This position exists at the following Stantec locations: Seattle, Lynnwood, WA, or San Diego, CA.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range
  • Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA Areas: $91,200.00 – $132,300.00 Annually.
Pay Transparency

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary

In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law). Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law. The benefits information listed above may not apply to union positions because benefits for such positions are governed by applicable collective bargaining agreements.
