Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a senior Manufacturing Tools Engineer to design tooling and equipment for aerospace manufacturing and integration across multiple programs. You will apply FEM, CAD, and DFA/DFM to deliver robust solutions, manage projects, and collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to meet safety, cost, and schedule goals.

Relocation is provided; this role offers shifts and multiple positions. U.S.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years’ experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling or fixtures for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
• Experience with FEM and structural analysis plus hand calculations.

Responsibilities

• Design production, development, test, integration, and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn units.
• Interpret and apply design/drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) in drawings.
• Collaborate with designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to optimize cradle-to-grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time).
• Manage projects including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, installation, testing, and commissioning.
• Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets for project completion.

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will Apply standard engineering knowledge and methods to design tools and equipment for manufacturing and operation of aerospace systems. Researches, develops and implements improvements to tooling and equipment to improve product quality. Works with engineering to identify problems with performance. Recommends solutions or enhancements. Documents experiments, tests and tooling development activities in reports. Supports production assemblers and operations with new or modified tools.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Design production, development, test, integration, and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
• Capable of integrating concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several projects in a fast-paced environment – projects will vary in size and scale.
• Ability to interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) when creating drawings.
• Handle a wide range of technical design challenges related to all types of assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
• Close collaboration with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to achieve the best possible cradle-to-grave metrics (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance/refurbishment)
• Manage projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning of custom tooling.
• Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.

Minimum Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years’ experience with design, build, and commissioning of tooling, fixtures, custom machines or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
• Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis in addition to the ability to perform hand calculations including the creation of Freebody diagrams
• Proven experience with CAD based design software for modeling and drafting.
• Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) including experience taking products from development design to rate production
• Proven understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis
• Proven understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines such as CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly, inspection, etc.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME BTH-1, aluminum design manual, and AISC.
• Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, etc.
• Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems
• Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems
• Experience with Analysis packages such as: ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, NX Advance Simulation, etc.
