Job description

About the role:

We are seeking an outstanding Mechanical Engineer 3, Consumables Sustaining to join the Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MSE) team at 10x Genomics. This is a key position for the sustainment and technical stewardship of on-market consumables products. This is a multi-disciplinary position that involves close collaboration with various groups including other operations functions (Supply Chain Management, Planning, Manufacturing, Quality Control) as well as Fluidics and R&D Engineering. You will play a key role in driving and supporting issue identification, root cause analysis and remediation.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in supporting complex plastic components for the life sciences or medical device industries. They should possess a broad understanding of the design and manufacturing of complex plastic systems and excel in solving complex problems. As a member of the team, you will be instrumental in supporting 10x manufacturing, supply chain, and service & support teams to support products that enable accelerated understanding of biology.

What you will be doing:
1. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Support the design, development and transfer of new consumable components.
  • Serve as mechanical point of contact for on-market consumables sustaining issues.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders across operations, commercial and R&D.
2. Root Cause Analysis and Sustaining Design
  • Troubleshoot and resolve both field and manufacturing issues with consumables (e.g. LSR-thermoplastic assemblies and precision injection-molded COC/COP microfluidics).
  • Lead/support root cause investigations (e.g. seal leaking, dimensional drift, biocompatibility, cracking) using FEA, tolerance analysis and hands-on failure analysis. Implement and verify corrective actions.
  • Support investigations into fluidic and microfluidic performance issues in partnership with broader sustaining and R&D engineering groups.
3. Manufacturing and Quality Support
  • Drive on-market engineering changes (ECOs/ECRs) through change control process.
  • Contribute to CAPAs, non-conformance investigations and support QC method development and deployment.
  • Utilize Arena PLM and Oracle ERP systems to manage product lifecycle and manufacturing processes effectively.
4. Continuous Improvement
  • Identify yield, reliability and quality improvement opportunities for on-market consumables.
  • Support Gage R&R, FMEA and risk assessment of on-market consumable issues.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 6+ (BS) or 4+ (MS) years of experience in mechanical design or sustaining engineering, with at least 3 years specifically in biotech consumables.
  • Plastics Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with thermoplastic resins (COC, COP, PC, PP), elastomers (TPE/TPU), and the nuances of precision injection molding.
  • Engineering: Strong understanding of 3D mechanical design, geometric tolerancing per ASME Y14.5, dimensional stack-ups and inspection procedures.
  • Tooling/Equipment: Demonstrated proficiency with CAD, PDM systems, simulation suites, metrology and imaging equipment (e.g. OGP, Keyence, Nikon) and data analysis tools (e.g. JMP).
  • Quality Systems: Familiarity with Risk Management, Process capability (cpk, ppk), FMEA, and Gage R&R.
