Qualifications

  • Advanced skills to create mechanical drawings using SOLIDWORKS CAD software.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide design and prototype support for testing and demos.
  • Advanced solid modeling skills and experience with technical data packages.
  • Knowledge of ASME specifications and Product Data Management tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and validate parts and assemblies with SOLIDWORKS (sheet metal, weldments, surfaces, drawings).
  • Generate complex models from sketches and concept designs.
  • Influence mechanical design using manufacturing process knowledge for rapid prototypes.
  • Evaluate systems and modify designs to fix malfunctions or meet new requirements.
  • Prepare cost estimates and provide design fabrication drawings and briefings.

Description

The Prototype, Manufacturing and Integration (PMI) Division of Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc (www.ara.com ) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 working on-site in our Madison, AL location. The ideal candidate must be proficient with SOLIDWORKS Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and provide engineering design and prototype build support for testing and customer demonstration. Will design, model, and validate parts and assemblies of varying levels of complexity utilizing SOLIDWORKS software to include sheet metal, weldments, simulation, surfaces, and drawings. Perform original design work after receiving the design goal or problem, general method of processing and engineering advice on related theoretical aspects to be considered in the design. Complexity of assignments requires the exercise of considerable initiative, latitude, independent judgment, and the ability to design independently with only general technical direction.

This position will require passing a national background check. Must have at a minimum a SECRET clearance from the US Department of War . Must be a US Citizen.

What you’ll do as a Mechanical Engineer 2:
  • Design, model, and validate parts and assemblies of varying levels of complexity utilizing SOLIDWORKS software to include sheet metal, weldments, simulation, surfaces, and drawings
  • Generate complex and high-quality models according to specifications from sketches, renderings, concept designs, and other project information
  • Utilize knowledge and experience of manufacturing processes to influence mechanical design of rapid prototypes
  • Evaluate operational systems and designs modification to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements
  • Prepares cost estimates for entire project or piece of the equipment
  • Provide technical guidance and/or briefings and updates to staff and leadership involved with producing design fabrication drawings
  • Provide oversight and input to manufacturing teams, ensuring the accuracy and quality of all systems
  • Assist project teams in preparing presentations and demonstrations
  • Ability to manage and prioritize numerous assignments
  • Apply analytical, evaluative, and constructive expertise to meet the critical deadlines assigned
  • Work under only general direction and independently determines and develops approach to solutions
  • Responsible to identify and evaluate new manufacturing technologies and integrate innovative materials and process improvements
Must Haves as a Mechanical Engineer 2:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent and 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience OR a H.S. diploma (or equivalent) and 12+ years’ experience in Mechanical Design Engineer DoW manufacturing field
  • Advanced skills, with ability to create mechanical drawings using SOLIDWORKS CAD software
  • Provide engineering design and prototype build support for testing and customer demonstration
  • Demonstrated advanced skills with solid modeling
  • Experience with developing and preparing technical data packages
  • Apply analytical, evaluative, and constructive expertise to meet the critical deadlines assigned
  • Be detail-oriented individual to design new equipment, supporting the needs of various clients
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical systems and tools
  • Advanced experience with product development
  • Experience with manufacturing items of various materials including metals and composites
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and quality processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of ASME specifications (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and administration of PDM software (Product Data Management)
  • Job requires any or all of the following: pushing, pulling, sitting, sitting for long periods of time, standing, standing for long periods of time, reaching, grasping, bending, climbing, stooping, vision for computer work and near and distance work and candidate must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. individually or 50 lbs. or more assisted
  • Be physically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to safety glasses, respirator, safety shoes, hearing protection and hand protection as required
Mechanical Engineer 2 Wish List/Preferred:
  • Working knowledge of Patternsmith and Rhino software
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks Surfacing
