Job summary

Howmet Aerospace Inc. in Whitehall, Michigan, seeks a Manufacturing Technology Design Engineer to advance aerospace investment casting and robotic automation.

You will design, test, and bring new equipment from concept through installation at Howmet facilities. You will collaborate with design teams, plant automation technicians, operators, and vendors, manage drawings with BOMs, and help maintain production readiness.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or related field, or an associate degree with engineering focus plus 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Willingness to travel 5–20% to other Howmet facilities.
  • Experience in machine design/engineering and familiarity with a manufacturing environment.
  • Preferred: 9+ years of experience in machine design/engineering.
  • Experience with robotic systems and tooling design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and implement advanced manufacturing equipment and automation.
  • Provide project support through the build and installation process across multiple Howmet facilities.
  • Support engineering and manufacturing teams to improve existing processes.
  • Assist in customer concept reviews and assist with customer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot corporate processes, cost reductions, and product R&D.
  • Follow designs through the build phase and implement equipment into production with PMs and critical spare parts.

Responsibilities

This position will be in our Howmet Research Center Manufacturing Technology Group and supports projects worldwide, for all Howmet Aerospace facilities.

This position is located in Whitehall, Michigan and is responsible for the research, design, and development of innovative manufacturing technology related to aerospace investment casting processes, and robotic and automation equipment to specific customer requirements. In addition, this position will be responsible for supporting current technology in use at various Howmet Plants, working with design teams, plant automation technicians, operators, and vendors. Lastly, this position will follow designs through the build phase and implementation of equipment into production including establishing PM’s and critical spare parts.

Key Responsibilities

Development, design and implementation of new, advanced manufacturing equipment and automation.

Provide project support through the build and installation process across multiple Howmet facilities.

Support engineering and manufacturing teams to improve existing processes.

Additional Responsibilities:

Support project designs though the build process including debug and runoff.

Prepare concepts for customer review as well as assist with customer specifications.

Assist in the troubleshooting of various corporate processes, cost reductions, and product research and development.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • BS Degree in the following disciplines: Mechanical, Product/Manufacturing Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • In lieu of Bachelors degree, Associate degree with Engineering focus and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in machine design/engineering role. Other experience may be considered.
  • 5-20% Travel to other Howmet facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of (9) years’ experience in machine design/engineering
  • Experience working in an engineering and manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks, and familiar with AutoCAD software
  • oExperience with large designs incorporating multiple subassemblies a plus
  • Able to manage multiple design projects, generating complete drawings packages with BOM’s.
  • Familiarity with 6-axis articulating arm robotics.
  • Experience with robotic mechanical and electrical systems including pneumatics, sensors, tooling, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness a plus.
  • Basic understanding of controls and servo systems.
  • Experience with tooling and fixture design.
  • Experience in reading electrical prints a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
