Job summary

U.S. Pacific Fleet is seeking a Surface Type Commander and Port Engineer to oversee maintenance and planning for off-ship repairs on assigned ships. You will coordinate agendas, develop work packages, and act as the technical authority for ship maintenance and repair requirements.

This civilian position requires a professional engineering background, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to travel to CONUS/OCONUS sites as needed.

Qualifications

• Requires at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-12 in federal service or equivalent.
• Specialized experience: professional engineer overseeing ship repair and modernization by planning maintenance and implementing technical priorities.
• Candidate should have experience leading maintenance planning teams and budgeting.

Job description

• You will serve as the Surface Type Commander and ships primary point of contact in coordinating efforts of all maintenance and planning activities in support of off-ship repairs for assigned ships.
• You will serve as a Port Engineer for assigned ships.
• You will provide assessment regarding the planning, implementation, operations, evaluation and extension of new ship maintenance/management.
• You will develop and prioritize work packages.
• You will coordinate scheduling of technical support activities.
• You will develop and present risk assessed evaluation of new or growth work modifications during negotiations.
• You will serve as the ships technical expert for all ship maintenance and repair requirements.
• You will provide technical assistance to other Port Engineers as required.

• You will be required to meet any applicable US Coast Guard credentialing or privileging requirements prior to appointment.
• This position requires the ability to work onboard ships.
• This position requires the ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• This position requires the ability to work in small and/or confined spaces.
• This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer providing oversight and direction for ship repair and modernization projects by planning maintenance requirements and implementing technical priorities to ensure efficient waterfront operations.

Examples Of Qualifying Experience May Be

• Holds a valid or has held a USCG Merchant Mariner Unlimited HP Engineering License (Highly Desirable)
• Possesses a Subject Matter Expert level of knowledge of shipboard HM&E systems.
• Act as Port Engineer and head of a maintenance team for all planning and execution of maintenance.
• Have spent time in shipyards as a lead of maintenance strategies and future planning
• Plan and adhere to a maintenance budget
• Prepare and attend Flag level briefs as a Subject Matter Expert on the class of ship assigned.
