Job summary

Veeco Instruments Inc. in Plainview, NY, seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the New Product Development team, focusing on wafer processing equipment, ion beam sources, and vacuum vessel design.

Overview:

Veeco’sprocess equipment solutions enable the manufacture of LEDs, flexible OLED displays, power electronics, hard drives, MEMS and wireless chips. We are the market leader in MOCVD, MBE, Ion Beam and other advanced thin film process technologies. Our high-performance systems drive innovation in energy efficiency, consumer electronics and network storage and allow our customers to maximize productivity and achieve lower cost of ownership. The Mechanical Design Engineer is a key member of the New Product Development (NPD) team, working on complex wafer processing equipment involving ion beam etch, ion beam deposition, chemical and physical vapor deposition technologies. This role involves overall system design, vacuum vessel design, ion beam source design, incorporation of OEM components, as well as many other engineering and design areas.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, design tools, company processes, and semiconductor equipment technologies.
  • Support the design and development of mechanical systems, vacuum assemblies, and precision components for advanced wafer processing equipment, ensuring performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost objectives are achieved.
  • Perform engineering analyses and calculations to support the design and development of vacuum process equipment, including heat transfer, structural mechanics, fluid flow, and motion systems.
  • Support prototype assembly, testing, debugging, and design verification activities. Assist in evaluating test results and identifying opportunities for design improvements.
  • Prepare presentations and participate in technical reviews. Incorporate feedback to improve designs and engineering knowledge.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, bills of materials, and test reports. Follow engineering processes, standards, and design practices to ensure quality and consistency.
Qualifications:

BS, MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering degree is required.Prior work experience from relevant internships or full-time employment is preferred.Experience with SolidWorks,Inventor, ProE or similar 3D CAD systemis required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Finite element analysis experience in structural and/or thermal, is preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamicenvironment as part of a multi-disciplinary team, able to take initiative, be creative and curious
  • Experience working in Project teams or Research groups is preferred
  • Must have the ability to be hands-on with devices, prototyping, and troubleshooting including standing for extended periods as needed
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to make technical presentations
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time to customer sites and/or supplier facilities on an as-needed basis
  • Introductory knowledge of Semiconductors, Ion Beam or Vacuum Physics through academic, internship or project work is a plus
  • Experience with SAP, or similar PLM system, is a plus
Salary and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is $65,000-$83,000, plus a bonus opportunity. We will consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors when determining your pay.
