Mechanical Engineer (PE) – Job Description
As a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), you will play a key role in the design, analysis, and oversight of mechanical systems for architectural and engineering projects. This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership ability, and a commitment to mentoring junior staff while contributing to the overall success of the mechanical engineering department.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design Oversight
- Review and approve HVAC heat load calculations and system designs
- Apply and interpret applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE, International Plumbing Code, and VA Technical Information Library (TIL)
- Guide and review use of design software (e.g., Trane Trace 3D Plus) for HVAC system sizing and documentation
- Review and mentor high-temperature piping stress analysis and design (e.g., AutoPIPE)
- Oversee plumbing system design and ensure compliance with local and national codes
- Review and coordinate mechanical and plumbing system layouts within Revit models and construction documents
- Utilize and guide use of CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit) for design and documentation
- Support use of LiDAR scans within Revit or Autodesk ReCap environments
- Review and mark up drawings and documents using Bluebeam Revu
- Assist in the development and review of project narratives and technical documentation
Project Support & Coordination
- Participate in design reviews and present models and technical solutions to stakeholders
- Work closely with project managers to develop project schedules, budgets, and execution strategies
- Support preparation of project narratives, design criteria, and technical guidelines
- Conduct site visits, field investigations, and client coordination as required
- Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting efficiency and documentation quality
- Mentor junior engineers, designers, EITs, and interns
- Provide technical guidance and support professional development within the team
- Collaborate effectively with project managers and cross-functional teams
- Lead or contribute to internal training, presentations, and lunch and learn sessions
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited) or related field
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant engineering experience
- Proficiency in design and drafting software (AutoCAD, Revit)
- Experience with HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trane Trace 3D Plus)
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, codes, and industry standards
