Job summary

APX in Greencastle, IN seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and improve sheet metal fabrication processes, products, and tooling. The role requires strong proficiency in SolidWorks and CAD software, plus programming skills for fabrication equipment and hands‑on fabrication experience.

You will collaborate with design, production, and quality teams to ensure manufacturability, accuracy, and efficiency while meeting customer requirements; provide hands‑on shop support for prototyping

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 2–5 years of sheet metal fabrication or related manufacturing experience.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and 3D CAD; familiarity with AutoCAD or similar software a plus.
  • Experience with CAM programming for CNC equipment (laser, punch, press brake, or machining).
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal processes, tolerances, and fabrication methods.
  • Hands‑on experience with fabrication equipment and shop practices preferred.
  • Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems for manufacturing documentation.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop sheet metal parts, assemblies, and fixtures using SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings, flat patterns, and DXF files for laser cutting, punching, and CNC equipment.
  • Program and optimize fabrication equipment (laser cutters, press brakes, machining centers, etc.).
  • Work with production teams to develop and improve fabrication processes for efficiency, quality, and cost reduction.
  • Translate customer drawings and specifications into manufacturable designs and production‑ready documentation.
  • Provide hands‑on shop support for prototyping, troubleshooting, and process validation.
  • Collaborate with quality engineers to define tolerances, inspection methods, and quality standards.
  • Participate in new product introductions from prototype through full production.
  • Research and recommend new technologies, tools, and methods to improve fabrication capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experience with CAM programming for CNC equipment (laser, punch, press brake, or machining).
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal processes, tolerances, and fabrication methods.
  • Hands‑on experience with fabrication equipment and shop practices preferred.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems for manufacturing documentation.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices is an advantage.
Working Conditions
  • Combination of office and shop floor environment.
  • Frequent interaction with production teams and fabrication equipment.
  • May require wearing PPE and participating in hands‑on prototyping or troubleshooting.
