Job summary

Hermanson Company seeks a design professional to create HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for commercial and institutional facilities, from high-rise to labs. You will support SPD Team and CAD Manager, delivering cost-effective, code-compliant designs with LEED awareness.

Minimum 5 years’ experience is required; WA PE licensure path preferred. Proficiency in HAP, AUTOCAD MEP, and REVIT is expected, with strong teamwork and mentoring abilities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical systems design for commercial and institutional buildings.
  • PE license in WA preferred or path toward licensure.
  • Familiar with codes (IBC, energy codes) and ASHRAE standards.
  • Experience with LEED and building energy modeling is a plus.
  • Strong communication, time management, and mentoring skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for diverse facilities.
  • Perform loads, ductwork, and piping calculations and equipment selections.
  • Coordinate with design team and project stakeholders to meet budgets.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for code compliance.

The Role

We are seeking a professional responsible for designing HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems for a variety of facilities, including commercial, high-rise, light industrial, community residential, and critical environments such as laboratories, hospitals, and data centers, with minimal supervision.

This role will involve supporting the SPD Team and the Engineering/CAD Manager to uphold an innovative and leading-edge Design-Build Mechanical Engineering Department. You will contribute to the mission, vision, strategy, and goals of the Company.

Our design targets are set at Best of Class standards, which encompass designs that are Code Compliant, Constructible, Cost Effective, Environmentally Conscious, Creative, and Complete.

Responsibilities

  • Supports sales efforts through sales assist work, including schematic scope level designs, written system narratives, system selections, and client presentations.
  • Performs HVAC calculations for loads (Carrier HAP program), ductwork sizing/layouts, equipment selections, and acoustical assessments.
  • Performs piping and plumbing calculations for system sizing, pipe sizing/layouts, equipment selections and utility sizing.
  • Coordinates design with other team members (Design Team [such as owners, architects, general contractors, structural, electrical & civil], Project Manager, Superintendent,…) to ensure design meets customers’ expectations at quoted cost.
  • Review of shop drawings, submittals to assure compliance with design intent.
  • Makes cost and quality effective decisions on systems to develop plans, elevations, system schematics, P&ID drawings and details as well as full equipment schedules with detailed control sequences of operation. Develop specifications as projects require.
  • LEED design and documentation experience, and familiarity with Energy Star, utility rebates and other sustainability issues. Energy simulation experience (eQuest, HAP) and LEED credentials preferred.
  • Coordinates CAD work with CAD Team Lead and back checks for accuracy, coordinates CAD effort on assigned projects.
  • Identifies and communicates concerns about project schedule, design budget, or technical issues with SPD Engineering Team Leader and/or Engineering Manager and is responsible to achieve project requirements.
  • Stays current in knowledge of codes and standards, design issues/techniques and newly emerging technologies.
  • Be mentored by senior engineers and mentoring of newer engineers
  • Provide support for quality control review of designs and value engineering of projects.
  • Discusses current project’s status with SPD Engineering Team Leader and/or Engineering Manager in weekly meetings and updates short and long term labor projections.
  • Adheres to Engineering Department and company standards and procedures.

The salary range for this position is $100,000.00 to $130,000.00. (The compensation offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills and experience).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of (5) years’ experience in mechanical systems design for commercial and institutional buildings – High Rise / Office required; Healthcare, Science & Technology, Multi-family, Laboratory, Government, and/or Civic Facilities experience preferred.
  • Path to or Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State Washington preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Uniform & International Codes, Washington/Seattle Energy Codes, ASHRAE standards, SMACNA, etc.
  • Exposure to sustainable design/LEED and building energy modeling, life cycle cost, etc.
  • Strong personal time management and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, and ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products and familiarity with latest versions of AUTOCAD MEP and REVIT.
  • Knowledge of load calculation (Carrier HAP) and familiarity with building energy simulation software a plus.
  • This position is required to support field personnel and service our customers on projects. Depending on project requirements this may require full time presence on the site and in some cases, presence before and after the project scheduled hours. Flexibility on hours and location of work is dependent on project requirements as determined by your supervisor.
  • This position requires the ability to walk and maintain balance over rough, icy, or muddy ground, climb stairs and ladders, work safely at heights without fear, and to work effectively while exposed to the weather for long periods.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience preferred.
