Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the Stack Forging Thermal Solutions team. You will help bring lab-developed concepts into mass production, commissioning and improving machines used in the Stack Forging process.

You will own design decisions, collaborate across product, process, and operations, and contribute to reliability and safety in a fast-paced environment. This role generally requires four days onsite per week with a strong emphasis on hands-on engineering.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years industry experience and a 4-year degree in Engineering.
  • Background in electro-mechanical systems and/or precision machine design.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment with a bias towards action.
  • Solid engineering fundamentals and familiarity with equipment design for production environments.
  • Familiarity with design for manufacturing, including sheet metal, machined and welded parts.
  • Exposure to automation systems, control cabinets, industrial sensors, PLCs, data acquisition and I/O devices.
  • Experience with GD&T, SolidWorks (with PDM), and FMEA.
  • Experience with sub-disciplines: fluid/gas handling, motion planning, hydraulics, laser cutting, vacuum systems.
  • A proactive problem-solver who communicates clearly in a fast-changing environment.
  • Readiness to work in a dynamic setting with high-risk trade-offs.

Responsibilities

  • Design components within Stack Forging manufacturing systems, including automated equipment.
  • Run design processes from requirements to concept generation and reviews.
  • Document and communicate design decisions and changes.
  • Support overall equipment efficiency, process stability, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with product, process, applications, and operations teams.
  • Perform proof-of-concept calculations and benchtop testing to inform design decisions.
  • Create and update subsystem designs, BOMs, CAD models, and drawings.
  • Support vendor selection and work with external vendors on components.
  • Execute tolerance analysis and root-cause investigations.

What You’ll Do

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will work on engineering efforts to bring products from the lab into mass production. Your primary objective will be commissioning, and improving the machines used in the Stack Forging process.

Who You Are

A skilled mechanical engineer with expertise in machine design and a deep understanding of reliability and safety. You have experience developing complex machines from concept to execution, solving tough engineering challenges along the way. You take full ownership of your projects, driving them forward independently while maintaining a strong sense of urgency. You know when to pivot, prioritize, and adapt to shifting demands to keep progress on track.

This role requires a high degree of technical ownership, cross-functional collaboration, critical thinking for root cause analysis, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This position generally requires a commitment of 4 days onsite per week.

Responsibilities
  • Responsibilities are subject to change based on shifting business needs
  • Component design within the machines in Stack Forging manufacturing system, including automated equipment for material preparation, cutting, inspection, bonding, and assembly
  • Run design processes with requirements, specifications, concept generation, concept down-selection, and design reviews
  • Document and communicate design process and decisions
  • Support improvement of overall equipment efficiency, manufacturing tolerance, process stability, process monitoring, machine reliability, and automation
  • Support refinement of machine requirements with cross-functional teams from product, process, applications, and operations
  • Proof-of-concept calculations and benchtop testing to inform design decisions
  • System and sub-system level design and analysis; utilizing parametric modeling to evaluate trade-offs
  • Develop and update subsystem designs, BOMs, specifications, CAD models, and drawings
  • Support vendor selection and collaborate with external vendors on components and subsystems
  • Statistical analysis for assembly tolerance stack up and perform root-cause analyses

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiar with metal additive manufacturing, robotics, or industrial automation
  • Experience with rapid prototyping: 3D printing, mill, lathe, laser cutting, CNC, hand tools
  • Basic SW experience: Python, linux, or PLC programming
  • Ability to learn new skills and capabilities on the job.
SALARY RANGE

$86,000 - $105,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
