Job summary

Burns Engineering seeks a Mechanical Designer to join our Power & Utilities team in Austin, TX or Philadelphia, PA. You will develop detailed mechanical system designs using Revit and AutoCAD, including piping layouts, equipment arrangements, and related infrastructure in accordance with Burns standards.

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Designer to join our Power & Utilities team in Austin, TX or Philadelphia, PA. Candidates based near any Burns office are encouraged to apply and will also be considered.

Summary

The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for developing detailed mechanical system designs using Revit and AutoCAD, including piping layouts, equipment arrangements, and related infrastructure. The Mechanical Designer will also be responsible for preparing project designs, project layouts, contract documents, and other technical project activities in accordance with Burns design standards and client requirements. The Mechanical Designer will have focused knowledge of a specific discipline. The Designer will work with some autonomy in the completion of engineering tasks of moderate complexity and will be mentored by mid- and senior level engineering staff.

Essential Job Responsibilities

• Create design drawings for projects using assigned 2-D or 3-D computer software.
• Perform routine assignments of low to moderate complexity.
• Develop preliminary sketches and notes to guide the creation of technical drawings within a specific discipline.
• Execute system layout and sizing for assigned design projects, ensuring alignment with project requirements and standards.
• Coordinate designs with other engineering disciplines and identify conflicts between disciplines.
• Collaborates in design coordination meetings with internal teams and clients, offering technical insights to support informed and aligned design choices.
• Review drawings of low to moderate complexity, record changes, and keeps all disciplines abreast of project details and schedules.
• Coordinate the contract documents with the construction teams.
• May be requested to assist in site inspections during construction stage as required.
• May be requested to assist in field data collection and/or field system verifications.
• Participate in the review and recommend adjustment to project specifications to fit project requirements.
• Participate in equipment studies and support selection processes to ensure the best fit for project design and performance.
• Ensure Burns design and formatting standards are consistent on all submissions.
• Perform all tasks in compliance with Burns (and, when applicable, a client’s) standards, policies, procedures, and engineering codes.
• Perform all tasks efficiently, accurately, within the allotted project hours, and complete tasks on or before the due date.
• Observe, understand, apply and retain Burns technical policies, procedures, design analyses, calculations, engineering methodology and codes, and equipment selection criteria.
• Complete special duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

Associate’s degree in engineering technology or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years of progressive drafting and design experience.
• Experience modeling mechanical elements within AutoCAD
• Experience modeling mechanical elements with Revit
• Industrial piping design experience
