Job summary

DPR Construction in Phoenix seeks a Mechanical Designer to support the design and development of mechanical building systems across project phases, under guidance from senior engineers. You will produce drawings, specifications, calculations, and design documentation while applying codes and industry standards.

You will use CAD and BIM to create 2D drawings and 3D models, develop HVAC and piping layouts, and coordinate with architects and engineers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design or related field.
  • EIT certification is required.
  • NCEES Record for future PE licensure preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, hydronic, piping, and mechanical building systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD and BIM software used for mechanical design and coordination.
  • Familiarity with building codes, engineering standards, and construction documentation practices.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a multidisciplinary project team.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, and design documentation under guidance of senior engineers.
  • Develop mechanical system layouts for HVAC, hydronic piping, plumbing, ductwork, and equipment systems.
  • Produce equipment schedules, system diagrams, layout plans, and supporting design documentation.
  • Utilize CAD and BIM to create and coordinate 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, architects, and other design disciplines for coordinated solutions.
  • Support construction administration by reviewing shop drawings, RFIs, site visits, and field coordination.
  • Assist in producing deliverables from conceptual design through construction documentation.
  • Incorporate quality control feedback to improve constructability and coordination.
  • Engage in continuous learning to expand technical knowledge.

Job description

The Mechanical Designer supports the design and development of mechanical building systems throughout all phases of project delivery. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this role is responsible for producing mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, and design documentation while applying engineering principles, applicable codes, and industry standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Works under the direction and mentorship of licensed mechanical engineers and project leadership.
  • May provide peer support and knowledge sharing with junior team members as experience develops.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, and design documentation throughout all phases of project delivery under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Develop mechanical system layouts for HVAC, hydronic piping, plumbing, ductwork, and equipment systems using applicable engineering principles, codes, and standards.
  • Produce equipment schedules, system diagrams, layout plans, and supporting design documentation for mechanical systems.
  • Utilize CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to create and coordinate accurate 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, architects, and other design disciplines to develop coordinated and constructible design solutions.
  • Support construction administration activities by reviewing shop drawings, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), participating in site visits, and assisting with field coordination.
  • Assist in the production of mechanical engineering deliverables from conceptual design through construction documentation while maintaining quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Incorporate quality control feedback and review comments to improve the constructability, coordination, and accuracy of mechanical deliverables.
  • Participate in continuous learning and professional development to expand technical knowledge and engineering capabilities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience) required.
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, building systems design, or a related field required.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
  • NCEES Record for future Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, hydronic, piping, and mechanical building systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD and BIM software used for mechanical design and coordination.
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and construction documentation practices.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while working effectively within a multidisciplinary project team.
