Job summary

Hargrove is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer in Philadelphia with 7+ years of industrial experience in mechanical/piping design. The role requires strong AutoCAD skills, P&IDs/PFDs proficiency, and familiarity with ASME B31.3 piping standards.

You will coordinate multi-discipline interfaces and contribute to design plans and field verifications. Responsibilities include leading reviews, delivering complete design packages, and supporting construction and turnover activities.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of industrial mechanical or piping design experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and 3D plant-design tools.
  • Strong knowledge of P&IDs, PFDs, piping plans, isometrics, fabrication details, piping specifications, and vendor documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of piping components, valves, supports, equipment interfaces, materials of construction, and design considerations for operability and maintainability.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME B31.3 process piping concepts and the ability to apply plant and project design standards consistently.
  • Demonstrated experience checking design deliverables, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, and resolving complex field conditions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and technical review of complex equipment layouts, piping plans, sections, isometrics, fabrication details, tie-in packages, and general mechanical drawings.
  • Translate process and project requirements into coordinated mechanical design packages using P&IDs, line lists, piping specifications, equipment data, vendor drawings, laser scans, and field verification.
  • Establish design approaches for difficult brownfield installations, including routing, access, maintainability, constructability, lifting, outage, and sequencing constraints.
  • Perform checking and quality reviews of drawings, models, BOMs, MTOs, and vendor information produced by internal and external designers.
  • Lead field walkdowns and design verification; resolve discrepancies and ensure redlines and final as-builts are accurately incorporated into plant records.
  • Apply and interpret plant standards and applicable mechanical and piping codes and specifications, escalating engineering judgments to the responsible engineer when required.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design interfaces and facilitate model, constructability, and design reviews with engineering, operations, maintenance, safety, construction, and vendors.
  • Develop or improve drafting practices, standard details, design workflows, drawing templates, and quality-control checklists.
  • Provide design input to estimates, schedules, execution plans, procurement packages, vendor reviews, bid evaluations, and construction work packages.
  • Resolve complex field design questions and support construction, commissioning, turnover, and project closeout while maintaining appropriate engineering approvals.
  • Identify and communicate design risks, scope gaps, cost impacts, and schedule constraints to project leadership.
  • Set a good example with all rules and regulations to achieve 100% universal compliance with HS&E procedures and regulations.
  • Participate in or lead design reviews, constructability reviews, safety audits, surveillances, pre-startup activities, and lessons-learned reviews.

What You'll Be Doing

Job Scope: Generally responsible for performing routine designs of less complex engineering assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This work will be performed under direct supervision.

Ideal Background

Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.

Registration: Engineer in training (EIT) registration is strongly preferred.

Experience: This position requires 7+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High school diploma; Associate degree in mechanical design, drafting, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible industrial mechanical or piping design experience, including significant brownfield chemical or process-plant work.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and demonstrated capability with applicable 3D plant-design tools.
  • Advanced understanding of P&IDs, PFDs, equipment arrangements, piping plans, isometrics, fabrication details, piping specifications, and vendor documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of piping components, valves, supports, equipment interfaces, materials of construction, and design considerations for operability and maintainability.
